I can't believe after joining this forum for over a year, I've never stopped to think .. what exactly does "Bob is the oil guy" get its name from? Who is Bob?

Couldn't find any answers on the main site about who Bob is..

And some history of the site perhaps? When was it started, what inspired it, how it progressed etc? I never stopped to think about any of this either but now my curiosity is piqued.

Bob started this site many years ago. I still remember back when Bob really was the oil guy....Bob was just a guy who was an oil geek like many of us, and started a website about oil basics. His forum quickly grew because it's linked all the time from almost every other automotive message board. He still pops up from time to time, but not often. I believe he gave up ownership of the forum due to health reasons.

Bob is a Schaefer's sales rep. He started a discussion site away from Noria to promote his products through chat and via his testing. To be fair he invited other folks from other companies, so he could show how his products are supposedly "better". Problem is - freedom kicked in, and well.....you got BITOG. No clear winners in any category.

Bummer thing is Bob had a stroke. Bob sold the site to Tony, who ran the site for several years (3+?). Tony passed away and now Tony's wife, Helen, owns BITOG. (Maybe someone can timeline this with dates)

how did Bob know Tony?

How did the prevoius owners, and now the current one, know all the mods? Are they all relitives?

Not sure how they first met.

Know the mods???

The internet. No relations at all.

This must be your first chat board!

how the heck should I know.

I miss Bob. I kind of caught the tail end of things when he was running the show. I remember he had a Ford Escort that he ran with no oil filter for many miles, can't remember the results.

Escort w/no oil filter

When I first got on here, Molekule (sp??) was the main science guy. He was the one you'd get into real technical discussions with like the affinity of carbon, oxidation, organics, etc.etc. and Bob was the "hands" on guy. I found this site looking for an alternative to Mercruisers High Performance gear oil because that stuff, even then, was really expensive. Bob's point was that his oil could better handle water intrusion than Mercruisers, so I suggested we do some sort of "test." Well, leave it to Bob, he got some containers, put Mercruisers oil in one and his in the other, added water, and shook it to get it all mixed throughly. Well, he proved his point to me. Very intelligent guy and I for one, have missed him since.

Idon't know about the Noria boards, but Bob had some interesting back and forths on the Edmunds board.

I think you can still see some BITOG history over there.

Bob and Tony are both more than decent guys.

( I won't say 'were' as I'm talking within my memory.)
