Anyone try this gear lube in the Scion 5 speed tranny?

More specifically, it's a 5 speed.

When the trans is cold, shifting takes more work. Kind of hoping that the synthetic will help out with that as well as the hot weather we're having here in Chicago.

Car only has about 1300 miles on it. Factory fill oil is coming out as well next week for Amsoil 100% synthetic 0w-20.

I went 22k on my factory fill on my 5 speed Corolla and put in Mobil 1 gear oil.

After 40k the transmission was shifting poorly so I went with Amsoil 75-90 gear oil in and it was much better.

I'm now at 106k and it still shifts well.

I'd recommend you wait till you have at least 10k on the transmission before changing it. Get some more wear on it so when you drain it your amsoil can last longer.

Take care, bill

I assume you are talking about Amsoil MTG 75W-90 GL-4?

Edmond,

This is the same stuff I have in my 5 speed Corolla which I'd bet is close to the same transmission in your car.

It is a good fluid and all I'd use in my car.

Still would recommend you wait till 10k before changing.

It's speed type. It's sorta like a morphed version of NuWingland butchering of the King's English. Then again, it may be the onset of Newspeak.

I frequently leave out the "r" in your. Heavy may be where heavily belongs ...etc..etc.

I have the same ride.

Cant comment on Amsoil, but can say Redlines GL4 is AWESOME fluid for our manual trans.

I dumped the factory fill before 10K miles. Even Scion said GL5 (the factory fill) is not a good choice. I know the manual says you can use GL4 or 5, but drain the 5 and replace with 4 ASAP. GL4 specific fluids are typically better for manual trans because they have the correct FMs and lower EP/AW additive levels.

Im sure the reason they use 5 is because it is cheaper to stock only 1 fluid than 2.

Anyhow, I noticed smoother, faster shifting. Even when cold, there is no resistance in the shifts anymore.

Odd, my 08 Scion xD requires a 75W GL4. That's right, not 75W90, just 75W. It's supposed to be a lifetime fill too. Even says so on the drain and fill plugs! Yeah, right.

use REDLINE MT-90 ( GL-4 ) in our '08 YARIS Liftback for the manual tranny with very good results . Before that used MT-90 ( GL-4 ) in a 2000 CHEVY Prizm ( Corolla ) 5 speed with great results . Did a motor route with the REDLINE and even under extremme heat it would shift with ease . Previous to the REDLINE the the PRIZM ( Corolla ) had a fill of MOBIL 1 GL-5 and would grind when downshifting and clunk into reverse , all that disappered with the MT-90 . Maybe in a few years I'll give the AMSOIL MTG ( GL-4 ) a try , hard to make that transition due to the very good performance with the REDLINE in both cars . GOOD LUCK

Ordered me 4 quarts of the gear lube and a gallon of 0w-20 along with a EaO9. DC is only about an hour away but paying the $16 for shipping was better than $4.19 a gallon for a gallon of gas, tolls and spending the time (which I don't have) to drive up there.

Also got 4 gallons of ASL for my neighbor.

Can't wait to swap out the old stuff.

i went with the amsoil mtg 75w90 on Bills and pablos recommendation and it is working well for me in my corolla 5 speed.

i drained the factory fill at 2200 miles, replaced with coastal 75w90 and drained that at 10K and filled with the mtg. I would use either the amsoil or redline, hear good things about that one as well.

The transmission fluid could be lost when the halfshaft gets replaced. That is probably why there are fill and drain plugs there.

That in mind, I once knew a guy with a Tercel. The car had almost 200K miles, and the MT gear oil was never touched. A little bit was added after the halfshaft replacement, but the car did OK.

Last year I finally changed the factory fill transmission fluid in my 1986 Jetta 5 speed.

It only lasted a little over 290k miles.

Still working fine, just decided to change it.

I'd change the tranny oil to AMsoil or Redline MTL in a few thousand miles.
It is NOT broken in yet, by any means.
Maybe at 20,000 or more it will be seated.
Don't be too critical just yet, is my point.
