Zicam is awesome

I've used Emergen-C in the past. I figure, even if it doesn't actually help me get over the cold faster, it's got a lot of vitamins so it can't hurt, right?

And sometimes I just take a multivitamin.

I think it was a recent/current MAN'S JOURNAL magazine. Read an article on preventing colds, that recommended 75 mg of ZINC taking quickly at the on set of a cold. Bought some ZINC tabs yesterday.

Article claimed Vitamin C or D or any other has proven no value for a cold. They did mentioned a herb BUT claimed no set quality standards for it, so iffy.

Need sleep 8 hours, exercise, wash hands frequently and avoid people with cold symptoms. Keep hands/fingers away from your eyes, nose and mouth.

I read that article all the way through. While it is somewhat critical of the business practices of Zicam, it stops far short of saying anything like "quack remedy."

As seen in this thread, it works for some people, and not for others. I'm one of the people it works for. As for the statements that all you need is some vitamin c and exercise (and whatever you deem a healthy diet to be), horsefeathers. People are individuals, some are more susceptible to colds. I have had more trouble with colds since I had a bout of pneumonitis (pneumonia combined with bronchitis), years ago.

Since a "cold" isn't caused by a single virus, but rather any of a large number of viruses, I don't think any cold remedy will work on all of them. I've had colds where Zicam didn't do much good, but often it really shortens the duration.

I have found that Zinc will shorten the duration and severity of symptoms of a cold (which is what they claim). You must start taking it right away, though.
I get like one cold a year, so its worth it to jump on it and beat it down so it doesn't affect my weekend plans.

Yeah, I've found that a cold typically takes me 7 days to get over....

But with Zinc, getting over a cold only takes one week!

LOL I found Zinc helps a little with getting rid of a sore throat.

A placebo works 30% of the time !

Remember that if you really believe then it's true... for you.

The placebo effect is very well documented.

I work directly with the public yet almost never get sick. Just wash your hands often and learn to NEVER touch your face...

I heard a MD one time recommend gargling (sp?} with very warm salt water as soon as you feel the back of your throat starting to swell/get sore/scratchy. He said this is often where it starts. I've tried it a couple of times and been very satisfied with the results. Sometimes it's gone the next day. Other times, I have to do it 2x/day for a few days.

I use an 8oz. glass of salted water and each mouthfull is gargled for about a minute. IOW, you need to go the distance...one short gargle isn't good enough, nor effective.
