Good Question, I am guessing it was quite High, like 1500

I have seen VOAs of mobil 1 5w30 API SF and it had around 1400 ppm of zddp and i have seen a 1996-98 advanced formula mobil 1 VOA that showed around 1000 ppm

Yup, levels were typically around what we see in a full-SAPS Euro oil, but of course some were higher and some were lower.
Before the mid to late 50s or so however, oils had little to no Zddp, because the valvetrain pressures were really low, so if you have say car older than that they will run merrily on modern low Zddp Mid or even low saps oils.
Although that doesn't mean a good full saps oil wouldn't add some protection.

ZDDP was first discovered to be a good, cheap, detergent/dispersant, I believe in the 1940's. Later. I believe the late 50's early 60's, it was discovered to have good anti-wear properties.
