This is my first post so don’t beat me up too bad. I have a Jeep Cherokee with a 4.0 inline 6 engine that has a flat tappet cam. I am trying to find an oil to use in it that has a high amount of ZDDP. What I want to know is how much ZDDP is in Kohler 10W30 Universal Motor oil and also how much ZDDP is in Briggs and Stratton 30W lawn mower oil?

Thanks

Maybe, if it has better anti wear properties? I don't know, I only know that the SM oils are not good enough for my 4.0 Jeep engine due to the lack of ZDDP. I am only searching for an alternative to SM rated oils.

stick with a good conventional oil like pennzoil i service one of those and i replaced so many parts on that car but the engine at 244,000 is still going strong we use 5w30 in the winter and sometimes 10w30 in the summer but it depends

I think your Jeep will be fine with an SM oil, millions of older Jeeps are running just fine with it. I had posed the same question to the Pennzoil people about older engines, they said no problem. As long as you're not racing you are GTG. I'm running Ford 4.9L from the 80's w/o issue.

You may want to do some more reading on this site before coming to that conclusion.

I would search the used oil analysis section for your engine and see real results. I believe you have been fed some incorrect information.

I have been using 15W40 Rotella but they have changed the formula so I want to be sure that I have enough ZDDP.

I use 5w30 SM in my Jeeps and no problems what so ever. My YJ had over 100K, ZJ was at 130K and my WJ has 90K.

The new Rotella T still has plenty of ZDDP for the Jeep.

The old formula had over 1400ppm. The new formula has 1200ppm so not much of a drop. I run Delo or rotella in both of our flat tappet race cars that have very high valve spring pressure with no issues.

Your jeep will live long and prosper on SM 10W30 with frequent OCI's. It may be a flat tappet motor, but the spring pressures and lobe ramp are pretty sedate...unless you've modded the motor. If you've done that then yeah run a CI-4+/SL rated HDEO. CJ-4 would work too, but I think you can still find the CI-4+ stuff out there for a few bucks less. Heck Gary Allen has ran 0w20 grade and 0w10 grade oil in his (it had a healthy add pack) and UOA shows wear is in control.

Thanks for all the advice. I will just keep using the 15W40 Rotella that I have been using and hope for the best. That Rotella oil is very good stuff.

Can you get Valvoline VR1 Racing Oil? That has about 1200 ppm zinc and phosphorus according to the product data sheet. Comes in 10w30, which is perfect for your climate, and it is not just for racing, but also for street use.

Your Jeep 4.0 will do just fine on ordinary API oil. I have seen plenty of them with 200K miles on the odometer with the original engine still running fine.

Ahhh the Jeep 4.0 is one of the best low stress engines ever made. I've seen several run to 400,000+ miles without a rebuild. My grandson has my 95 GC and it was run on Mobil 1 5w30 & PureOne filter for a 7,000 mile OCI in IL. The last I heard it was running very well (rear main weeping) with 197,000 miles. Never had the valve cover off. I think today I might go to a 10w40 Pennzoil yellow and a 6,000 mile OCI. The flat tappet cam in the low stress engine does not require a high Zinc oil like a more highly stressed engine ( high RPM and high valve spring pressure). Just my experience. Ed
