Rank the fully synthetic oils from best to worst that you would find at a typical Walmart. Best means best protection, performance, and value (regardless of grade). How do the more readily available oils stack up against each other?

As far as I know, Mobil 1 is the only synthetic oil availible at Walmart. Valvoline, Penz, Quaker, and Super Tech are all group III.

I never buy oil at WalMart but I do walk the isle on occasion:)
1. Mobil1
2. Penzoil Platinum
3. Valvoline SynPower
4. Rotella Full Synthetic
5. SuperTech Full Synthetic
6. Castrol SynTec
7. Quaker State

Well, I would buy the Pennzoil synthetic. But most would expect that since I work for Pennzoil. I think it is a very good product in which I use in everything I own. I have used some type of Pennzoil product in everything I've owned for the past 40 years.

Now, if Pennzoil did not have a synthetic, and I did not work for them, I would buy Mobil 1.

Oh, in case someone missed it on your first post,

oilguy3: The new Platinum has been updated. Group III+ +PAO & Ester. It may not go 20,000 miles, but for a 10,000 mile run I will stack it up against anything Mobil 1 has.

Mobil 1 EP, Mobil 1 and Pennzoil. Mobil 1 will hang with the boutique oils as well and in many cases BEAT them.

Well the new version of Shell 5w-40 rot. is not all GP-3 and a unknown percent of GP-4 is introduced into the bases,,,Shells adds in the Rotella syn is a good balance,,,,also the new Penzoil Plat. is going to be a winner,, Mobil syn,s are a mainstay,of quality lube,,,,,,look out for the Phillips semi-synt for being a real decent notice,,,dont let the price fool you for what you are getting, though not a long distance oil,,,,,,,,,,,BL

How much does the Pennzoil synthetic cost? If it is a dollar or so cheaper then Mobil 1, then why not use the Pennzoil? I would, as long as it pours at low temperatures like the Mobil 1. I trust Johnny a lot-he works for Pennzoil and he should know what he is talking about. And in VOAs and UOAs around here Pennzoil usually looks very good.

I used Pennzoil a long time ago and then moved away from it because of all the engine sludge claims and stuff like that. Guess what motor oil I moved to? I moved to Valvoline, which according to VOAs and UOAs around here is not exactly he best motor oil around.

If the Pennzoil costs as much as the Mobil 1, I say you might as well use the Mobil 1. But if the Pennzoil costs something like a buck less a quart, and can provide comparable service, then you are shooting yourself in the foot. You are tossing 4-5 bucks out the window every oil change.

I knew one of you Canadians was going to chime up with that.
Hey, can't you get GC in Canadian Wal-Marts?

Yup. $8.25/L though.

That is the price with tax added though, and it's worthwhile to note that GC is priced lower than Mobil 1 in Canada too.
