Oil choices
A. Castrol Syntec 5w40 (not BC)
B. Castrol Syntec 0w30 (Green GC)

These are the two oils I have to pick from in my garage. Which oil and why?

Note: Last time I used GC I noticed some consumption (1/2 qt after 4000 miles) This could have been due to break in as it was used from 3k to 7k.

Made in USA from domestic and imported components.

Use them both but the GC is a better quality oil with more additives.

Both? I guess you mean either one. Keep the suggestions coming. I like GC's additives and quality base oil, but viscosity is a concern too.

My vote is for the GC. Why because of used oil analysis we have seen on this fourm. Hard to find a better oil in my humble opinion.

GC over 5w-40. Better basestock, great used oil analysis and it's a thick 30wt.

FYI

SYNTEC 0w30 = 12.1 cSt @ 100C
SYNTEC 5W-40 = 14.0 cSt @ 100C

Well, I got a second wind and changed the oil tonight in my garage. Drum roll please....


And the oil of choice is GC!

I plan on running this for 7500 miles in the heat in a turbo application. I will be doing a used oil analysis in about 7 months. This will tell us what GC is really made of!

We already know what GC is made of & how well it works.

Your future used oil analysis will tell us & you what's going on inside your engine.

Syntec European Formula 5W-40.


You are under warranty, 5W-40 is thicker and meets all VW specs and approvals.

Syntec 0w30 meets all VW specs and approvals as well. It's not being a 40 weight that makes the oil meet the specs. It's the cSt range, additives, flash point, etc... that makes the oil meet the spec.

Who cares about cSt? HT/HS is the same 3.5cP and I suspect GC would maintain it consistantly over the interval. I would even pay more for GC.
