Hey guys i know some of you are against this but i just received my K&N airfilter for my Honda GCV 160 engine. After running the lawn mover it seems a tad rough running, starts on the first pull just fine like it did before. In the next few months ill be installing a E3 sparkplug and adding a new mulching blade. Any reasons why it would run alittle rough...after installing the stock type filter it runs fine.

I think i wasted 25.00.

take the filter out alltogether and run it, then put the OE filter in. Do all three in a close amountof time, and see if the difference is real.

You might be running a little lean with the increased air flow... Just a thought. I use the E3 as well with great results in all my equipment, and I would have a mulching blade but I can't find one one to fit my 24" deck.

Could be, i ran 89 octane...maybe ill try 93. Is there a fuel adjustment on the carb? Its funny the engine runs the same with no airfiter, once i put the stock one back it ran like a charm.

I don't know what the carb on your unit looks like. I wouldn't doubt there's a fuel adjustment, but if there is a choke you could choke it easily to maybe 1/3-1/2 way and see if that evens it out. That would answer our a/f ratio question.

I run the stock Honda AF and stock NGK plug. The torque spec on my Honda blade is 70 ft. lbs. Check the torque spec for your blade. You don't want that thing coming off. Mower starts on 1/2 pull every time.

Don't think the K$N would cause the engine to run rough? Maybe a batch of bad fuel.

Given the fact that the engine runs fine both without a filter and with the stock filter, I'd have to conclude that your new filter is making it run richer, not leaner. I mean, you can't get any leaner than no filter, right? If anything, air filters make engines run richer, never leaner.

In my opinion any K@N filter is a waste in most all uses.

Nope i ran it with the K&N and without a airfilter, it ran the same. Put the stock one back in smooth as silk.

I dont think a airfilter can adust a richer mixture unless its fuel injected.

It was my understanding that the engine ran well with the stock filter installed, but ran equally poorly with either no filter or the KN. Presumably due to the low restriction (read: 'rock catcher' )design of KN air filters. Obviously his the stock filter is more restrictive than the KN, so how could a move to a less restrictive filter equal a richer mix?
