Just a friendly discussion of your favorite place(s) to buy parts.

For a time, I really like O'Reillys but now I prefer Napa, at least around here.

While doing some brake line work (replacing the proportioning valve that had one different sized connection), I went out looking for inverted flare nuts. A guy working at one of the local O'Reillys tried to claim that there is *one* size of inverted flare nut on brakes lines which I knew was [censored]. I showed him the old PV and he shruged and said that's all they have and I'd gave to go online and special order something like that.

I to Napa and the guy there walked me over to the rotating rack of brake lines with all different sizes if inverted flare nuts already on the lines. He also pulled out a plastic sorting box of loose ones. They seem to know more about auto parts than some of the guys at O'Reillys. Maybe Napa doesn't have such a high turn over of workers as O'Reillys or something. I think Napa is a franchise kind of setup which might be why. The local franchise owner may hire more knowledgeable people than a corporately owned store.

Bumper to Bumper can be good too and may also be a franchise setup. The local BTB was the only store in town that had the right sized, thin wall socket in stock for the big axle nuts on the Dana 60. I checked O'Reillys, Advance, Auto Zone, Napa and a locally owned big truck & trailer shop (catering to semis and the like).

O'Reillys has better prices on parts and accessories most of the time but you may be at the mercy of people who know less than you do. I still shop there but I often check Napa first now.

I did have a good experience with Advance once. I was needing a voltage regular for my 93 Escort's alerntaor. O'Reily was going to have to order it and the price seemed high. I went down the road to Advance (I was needing to get one that day) and they had one in stock at a lower price.

At the other Advance Auto, I had a poor experience and won't shop there now (and Advance as a whole is my least favorite as a result). I bought a snap ring clamp tool like for CV axle boots (about $10) and I found it didn't work for the task worth a flip. So I took it back and asked for a refund. He stated that since the package was dirty/greasy, they couldn't put it back on the shelf to resell it so no refund. I asked why they would try to resell something I said didn't work and he didn't really answer that. Finally he said the most they could do was exchange for another.

I decided to be a smart [censored] and said fine, exchange it. After he was done with the exchange, I turned and took two steps toward the door, turned back around, walked back to the counter, set the new, perfectly clean one on the counter and asked for a refund on it. I'm surprised his eyes didn't roll right out of his head and across the floor when I did that. *LOL*

He said he just explained he couldn't do that. I said "oh, now you can't refund me on a new one that isn't dirty either?". He finally caved and gave me a refund just to get me out of the otherwise completely store.

The other (better) one, I bought a new oil cap for the van (the one on the valve cover) which didn't quite fit right. It fit the hole but wouldn't snap tight like the old one does. When I went to return it, they were scratching their heads on how/why the other guy who sold it to me when it wasn't in their system and at first acted like they didn't want to give a refund on it, being opened and wasn't pulling up in their system as fitting the vehicle I bought it for.

I cleaned off the bit of oil that got on it when I tried to install it, though so it wasn't dirty, just opened. They did finally do a refund after about 5-8 minutes of them trying to figure out why the other guy sold me that one to fit the van... trying to pull it up in the system. I suspect he knew more about engines and figured it would fit (almost did) without so much as looking it up. I recall he just walked over and pulled one off the shelf when I sold him what I needed after he did an initial computer parts search. So.. the old original oil cap is back on. Doesn't seem to be leaking (or isn't enough to be a problem) so it's fine and dandy.

O'Reilly and Advance seem to have the best deals on oil & chemicals, so I stock up there when stuff is on sale. They also carry the brands I prefer. The one NAPA in town is totally out to lunch on prices. AutoZombie is pretty much useless. I don't go there anymore. I don't depend on anyone in any store knowing anything about anything. The people in the auto biz these days are there because they burned the fries. When I can wait, I shop first on Rock Auto and Amazon.

That's rare these days. I have seen a lot of old, vacant downtown auto parts stores with some local independent name and then something like "Napa" or "Motorcraft" on the sign to the side smaller.

My favorite auto parts store was Kragen, bought by O'Reilly about 3-4 years ago, they had oil on sale and rebate for unreasonable low price such as Synpower for less than $1/qt. Their general parts were usually lower than Pep Boys and Autozone by 10-20%.

Yep, I have bought a ton of RockAuto and a little from Amazon and ebay. One RA order was over $500 with shipping for a ton of front end parts and more. Even with shipping, it was cheaper than any retail store. I was replacing the drag link, center links, tie rods, shocks, ball joints. I bought a Waterpump and timing set but haven't had them installed. I need to ebay them and get rid of them so I don't have to haul them in my motorhome. Some shops won't warranty work if you brings in the parts.

I do not often purchase from O'Reilly Auto Parts. I used to work for them. I was working for Hi/Lo Auto Supply when they merged with O'Reilly.

After I left the company on good terms - 2 weeks notice/voluntary separation for greater career opportunity - the Super Start battery on my wife's car died. The staff up to the Assistant Manager at the O'Reilly near my house refused to warranty it. Even with the receipt.

I went down the street and bought a Duralast from Oh-NoZone. Called my old DM Monday morning and returned to O'Reilly for a cash refund. Didn't get it from the Assistant Manager though. He did glare at me menacingly from back by the commercial manager's work-station.

I just haven't wanted to go back since.

I do not care for 99% of the staff at AutoZone. I know what I want when I go in from their website.

I like going to PepBoys. The staff are usually of the AutoZone variety but they have a lot of gen-sets, compressors, cheap Chinese motorscooters, and miscellaneous "Car-bage" (car related garbage) Usually a good laugh there.

NAPA is hit and miss. Staff can be pretty good but I always disliked their managers. The ones that I met struck me as just sales guys. Not car guys. They would be equally at home selling life insurance.

I mostly order from RockAuto. Better prices and if I get the wrong part, it's my own [darn] fault

Auto Value can be a good place to get parts. They have WIX and WIX made filters.Their filters will say Affinia on them,Affinia is the company that owns WIX.

They also have many of their parts made by the more well known companies such as Wagner,MOOG,Federal-Mogul and others.

They can also be cheaper on some parts than the big stores.

Price wise on most goods... they seem to go like in this order from cheapest to most expensive (at least around here):

O'Reilly
Napa
AutoZone
Advance

I have used AutoZone rental tools when O'Reilly didn't have them available. While the workers may as well be working at Payless Shoes or Petco with the knowledge of cars they have, the stores do have a large selection fluids, accessories and sometimes "help!" parts that may be sold out elsewhere.

Not sure how bumper to bumper fares due to forgetting about them most of the time due to poor stock. It seems every part I have ever gone in and asked about, they say they don't have in stock. What on earth is in 3/4 of their building behind the small store front that takes up 1/4 of the building if they don't have anything for common vehicles in stock?

The only things they have ever had that I purposely went in for was the axle nut socket and a specific brand of oil leak stopper additive I stuck in an old junky car I had.

Sure, Napa and O'Reilly have to order a lot too but they're also much smaller buildings.

I have 4 AP stores within 3 miles of me. Pep boys probably has the biggest selection, but I won't use their parts. I liked the Kragen as there were some guys in there who were somewhat knowledgeable, but it takes forever to check out. As an oreily's it is Ok I guess. The Napa has the best counter persons and unexpected parts availability, in stock, but ridiculous prices on many. They wanted $13.25 for a Wheel seal today and I walked out.

The AZ by me is tiny and the last time I needed something from behind the counter, I was ignored while the Spanish speaking clientele were helped, and I nearly broke their door off the hinges storming out of there cursing at them in Spanish.

None of them are a favorite, and they are visited as a last resort. I prefer to research my products online now, and will wait for mail order, just so I do not have to deal with the stores, the counterpersons, the traffic to get there, the gas wasted to get there, the inflated prices.

I like Rock Auto's catalog, and Amazon's free shipping, and Summitt has gotten some money from me too. I bought a Silla radiator from autoparts warehouse. thing started seeping in 8 months. I get about 3 e mails a week from them now with all sorts of discount codes.

If I do need something pronto, I call the store with the part number ready, and part of me is hoping they do not have it so I do not have to go there and deal with them.

I think each store sets their own prices since they seem to be a franchise kind of setup. Advance may do it based on locale since they as ask for a zip code and make you set a store before they'll show prices, just like Napa does. Napa's site also states that the price shown may very in the store. The price also changes (usually a little less) if you choose home shipping instead of in-store pickup... which only half works by the way. It has to be in stock or else get never get a notification and you'll never get the part since it doesn't make you pay to order an item for in store pickup. I found that out last year.

Napa's wheel seals here have been $2-3 each. When I was repacking the bearings on a 1967 travel trailer around 2007, they had the right seals in stock to fit. More recently I think I got some seals there for about that same price.

I ordered a PowerSports battey from Napa on Friday from a nearby store (no freight). That's one disadvantage to Napa. They charge freight on orders if it comes from further away where as O'Reilly doesn't. He called a store about 40 miles away who had it and he said no freight charge. Had it needed come from a store or warehouse 225-250 miles away, it would have had $15 freight. I would have said no thanks and gone to O'Reilly who sells the same size battery for the same price as Napa. He said it would be in Saturday but I told him I'd pick it up this next week when I get to town next.

(Sucks being 15-18 miles from auto parts stores..)

My favorite auto parts store : anyone but Auto Zone

I have had good experiences with Advanced, O'Reillys, and Napa .

In downtown Lansing MI there is a NAPA store where all the counter guys have been there 30 plus years. In the 80's I would go down there and fill up half the truck with filters and other misc. parts about once a week for my families bridge construction business. They know me by name, ask me about my family when I come in.

These guys really know their stuff.

Pep Boys,AutoZone,O'Reilly,Advance Auto...these are all corporate owned chains.Nothing independent about them. These should all (within reason) function the same and look the same.
Now the majority of NAPA locations are independently owned and operated (Over 6000 of the 6600 outlets),so looks/stock/prices and attitudes will vary. There are some small local chains that are hooked up to Auto Value/Parts Plus...etc,and these largely will look/perform similarly.

Here locally I have found O'Reilly's to be very good. I buy all parts from them and find their staff to be helpful.

There is an Auto Zone, Advance Auto, Napa, O'reillys, and Carquest within just a few miles of home here in Norton Shores, MI. Carquest is my favorite. Competent, helpful, and always fun to go to, although I don't buy oil there.
