I continue to be impressed with this oil. The UOA's that I continually see show low wear and great TBN retention. What have your experiences been with the Rotella syn when it comes to improved mileage, quieter engine, etc...?

I have also noticed the low UOA's with the stuff. That is why when people at TDS ask which Synthetic to use in their PSD, I always say Shaeffer's 9000 or Shell Rotella Synthetic.

Thing is, I'm not a real big fan of Rotalla T dino, but their syn version has impressed me.

Without saying that the Rotella T 5w40 is the best it IS as good as it gets. If you look at my recent post, granted I don't get your miles but at 9500 the oil is still real strong, especially in a 6.0.

For an HDEO: B+
For a "synthetic" HDEO: C
From a $ standpoint for 5w-40: A+

The reason I say that is because of all the UOAs on my previous Duramax, Rotella Syn thickened the most if I didn't have my EGR blocked, & the TBN was the lowest. Personally, I think Delo is better than Rotella syn, & I'll only use RTS over Delo in the winter, when that "5w" is needed. JMHO.

wyandot the only thing that I see thats better on your Delo sample over your Rotella sample is the iron rate and that was due to a bunch of fuel dilute in the Rotella which also brought the flash point down. How would've the Delo performed if it had been diluted with fuel?

I have used it since 15K miles in a GMC Duramax (presently at 60K miles). I am using it because of low temperature winter start ups and the fact that I live on a hill and no matter what direction I go, the first 5 or 6 miles is downhill so the engine does not warm very quickly. I did try one crankcase of old Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5w-40 (superceded by Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck). I thought the engine was noisier on start up with the Mobil 1 product.

I am also using Rotella Syn in a 1991 Infiniti Q45 that now has around 200K miles on it. Have been using it in this car since 2002, (or about 70K miles). I have owned this car since new, and the engine has never run better.

As a result, 5w-40 Rotella Syn is my "default" oil. I have about 25 gallons of pre-Katrina Rotella Syn product in my oil hoard.

snoboy, I presume you're looking at my most recent Rotella syn UOA (I had my EGR blocked during that OCI). As an example, an 8k mile UOA with Rotella syn from late Aug to the middle of Oct 04 had iron @ 12 ppm, visc@210 was 76.6 & TBN was 6.2. Blackstone commented, "The viscosity is a few points higher than what we typically see with used 15w/40". They even asked if I used any oil additives. Now if you look at the BITOG viscosity chart, 76.6 is about right in the middle of a 40w, so I never understood why they questioned that, but Delo was the only oil I ever tested (without the EGR blocked) that fell into Blackstone's "value should be" range.

I don't even know if I have copies of all the UOAs I had done on that truck, since I left copies in the owner's manual when I sold it. But off the top of my head, Delo held it's viscosity better, had slightly better wear rates, & had better TBN #s than Rotella syn, so why spend the extra money?

wyandot, yes that's the one I was looking at. I take your word on the UOAs. I am probably wasting my money because Delo is readily available at Costco for apx. $6.50 a gallon. If I had any sense I would buy it, run it at 6 month intervals and be just fine. With that said I dont think Delo is as good (on cold start-up) below freezing as say Rotella syn.

That's exactly what I eventually started doing & will continue to do in my new truck. Delo in the warmer months, & switch over to Rotella synthetic in late fall. That 5w really made a noticable difference on cold mornings.

CJ-4 will be out soon though, so who knows how they'll compare this fall?
