Renault rn720 - switching to 5w-40

Hello,

I own a Renault Megane 1.9dCi 96kw with DPF.

Car has ELF EVOLUTION FULL-TECH FE 5W-30 acea c3/4 rn720 oil in it per the manual.
It is changed every 10k km.
The car is driven very hard and has purflux oil filter which is bigger then the rest of the offerings.

The thing that is scratching my head is that the 88kw engine which is the same as my one but without DPF uses a3/b4 rn710 5W-40 oil.

Per my investigation it seems like the choice for the change in viscosity is to improve fuel milage and aid with DPF clogging by having lower SAPS?

The engine never ever does the DPF regen by itself because it's driven hard.

Since the car spends a lot of time on autobahn doing +170km/h/+105mph I would like to put 5W-40 in it.

What grade should I look for, I am willing to try my luck using better oil at expense of DPF clogging up.
So far I've only found the Castrol MAGNATEC 5W-40 C3 to be a suitable replacement.

I am from Europe.

Thanks in advance for your answers,
Ante

I speculate that C3 40 grade oils are easier to find in Europe as you found a common brand offering. That should work or find an oil that says is compatible with dpf.

My Duster with the K9K 874 is specified for RN 720. I've used Porsche C40 / VW 511 oils which are all *w40's based on ACEA C3 since it was brand new.

@Bailes, read your posts very well.

What vw511 oil would you recommend?
whats your oci and how many miles per day?

I buy Fuchs Titan GT1 Flex 3 5w40 as it's the cheapest Porsche C40 approved oil I can find. I usually pay £30 for 5 litres of it which is a total bargain!

I do 5,000miles (8,000km) or 6 month OCI's. I average 400miles a week which is mostly long 'high speed' motorway driving.

would you recommend an different oil for 10k km oci or should I shorten the interval?

Thank you very much!
The ELF I'm now using is rated to 30k 😳
I tried sticking to long life oils/changes with a PDtdi Polo [🥰] 110, but I couldn't force myself to do the whole hog mileage so changed the oil and filter and went back to fixed periodic changes.

HOWEVER the proof was in the way the engine revved post oil change, the tacho just span round and the way the car pulled was transformed.

Now, that was a real life horror story, my friends.

If you prefer 5w40 over 5w30 you can use it. Said that, some 5w40 are nothing special and some 5w30 are better quality and performance, so you could see even worse results with 5w40.

0,5 to 0,3 oil consumption /10k km with hard driving shows really good condition and oil work, I wouldn't change that Elf with Castrol 5w40. Most time these regular 5w40 works similar or even worse performance what good w30.

what oil would you recommend?
5-30 was used to save fuel as far as I can see

.
I'd keep running C3 oil too. 5W-30 or 0W/5W-40 doesn't matter much if any.
One pro for 5W-30 compared to 0W/5W-40: Less VI improvers. Most 5W-30
tend to stay in grade longer/better.
MB 228.51 and 229.52, BMW LL-04, VW 507 00 or 511 00, Porsche C30/C40.
They're all extreme stout. More than enough choice in Europe, plenty.
I think 10.000 km appear very short for your use. I'd personally expand OCIs
to up to 15.000 km, preferably after winter periods.

The usage of the car has changed, it's used mostly in city driving now and it has been mapped including a DPF removal.

I've put elf 5-40 nf in it which I had on hand. It seems a bit quieter but that may just be the placebo

What crossed my mind is that maybe the car was quietly regenerating the DPF without turning on a light which would explain the low oil consumption.

either way, I will keep monitoring the oil consumption.

Go ahead use the 5w30 C3 and change it every 7500 km or so. You should be good. Or get a 5w40 C3 no shortage of those (Castrol Edge for instance).
