That is good to hear. Did you post your UOA's? I am curious to look at them.

Again, congrats on your independent thinking and superb choice of oils!

RP fanboys are just as annoying as M1, Amsoil, PYB, ARX, Schaeffer, GC, Lucas, iPhone or Bieber fanbois.

And since when did 'thinking just like me' mean 'independent thinking'?

FWIW I've used Castrol, Quaker State, Mobil 1, Rotella, Amsoil, Schaeffer & Pennzoil Platinum in my cars. I like the oils what give me the highest value (best performance, lowest cost, easiest to get) - I couldn't care less whose name is on the bottle, I only care what's IN the bottle.

It's independent to reject the unwarranted hatred of Royal Purple, and choose that outstanding oil.

No, AS YOU ALREADY KNOW, that would be dumb. Royal Purple is the smart choice, which is what we choose! Class dismissed, 1251.

Yes M1 0w30 would be a fine choice but -20F is not that cold.
I'd suggest Pennzoil Platnium 5w30. It's actually lighter than M1 due to it's higher 177 VI at all temp's.

I'm not really a fanboy of anything. My Dad uses nothing but Castrol. I go through phases. I usually find an oil that I want to use for one reason or another and I stick with it for a while then it changes. I've gone from Castrol, PYB, Motorcraft, Quakerstate, Valvoline...... They all do the same job

Aside from the RP derailment, at -20 F, either conventional or synthetic would serve you well. We get down to -40 here, and I've used 5w30 for many years. CATERHAM suggested PP 5w30 for the synthetic choice. For conventional, pick any modern, name brand one you like and go with it, be it Pennzoil, QS, Castrol GTX, Valvoline, or whatever works.

For the record, I've used mostly Castrol GTX, QSGB, and PYB in 5w30 for the winters, with some successful runs of MaxLife 5w30 for a vehicle that needed a HM oil.

I think I will be going with 5w30 PP, synthetic seems like it has more than enough advantages over dino oil that it is worth the extra price.

What would constitute a good reason for ever switching to a high mileage oil? [censored], I've heard people say "Oh, well, 30,000/50,000/75,000/100,000/150,000 miles is a good point to start using HM oils." Is there anything other than the (somewhat) arbitrary miles to look at for considering one?

This vehicle is running near perfect right now, only major-ish motor work that has been done is head gasket change, supposedly (from the guy i bought it from) because it was running something other than Dex-Cool that ate up the gasket. (running dexcool now, know there is a huge debate on whether it is horrible death liquid or just as good, but that is for another thread another time).

Another question: which oil filter should I go for? Used to always run the fram high mileage filters in my ford explorer before i moved up here, considering doing the same now, but is there any real advantage (or disadvantage?) to the HM filter for my vehicle?

I know I have a lot of questions, but thank you guys for being so helpful. Also, really like that I can get a bunch of opinions on this instead of fanboy vs fanboy. Speaking of which, will totally run RP for a while when I am less, er, poorish, on the off chance that it will turn my cavvy into a camaro. That...that could happen, right?

Also looks like it was running Castrol dino 10-w30 up til now, definitely going to change it out before the winter hits, although I do have a coolant heater installed, don't want to run it any harder (or dumber) than need be.

PP 5w30 will work just fine. As for filters, stick with what's treated you well. I'm not a huge Fram fan, at least as far as their lower end oil filters go, but that's just my opinion. Personally, I prefer OEM, Wix, or Bosch. When I can get a Bosch Premium for $2 cheaper than a Fram, it's not a difficult choice to make.
