Yay or Nay: buying oil filter from Amazon

Never had an issue, and it has been years since I have installed a filter from anywhere else. Also, I am regularly using $3.00 or less Ecogards.

Over the past two, maybe three years, I have gotten Baldwin oil filter number B1402 on a few occasions, and they are typically US-made. The one time they weren't, they were a set from Morocco that I'm not sure are counterfeit or not. I don't know if that was a temporary supply chain issue fix (and contacting Parker-Hannafin wasn't productive in that regard) but I have gotten USA-made Baldwin filters with date codes before and after those, and I'm not going to be buying them on Amazon any more.

Shipping from any site runs the risk of shipping damage (just got a refund from Summit Racing for two rattling Pennzoil filters, in fact) so definitely take a look at anything you have shipped before the return window closes. You still need to look at filters in store, but you can catch issues that day.

I spent a lot of time on BITOG, but never see actual claims of counterfeit oil filters. It would actually be a pretty difficult thing to counterfeit, would it not???

let's say you're a factory in chynah and someone puts in an order for you to produce 10k widgets, after the order is fulfilled there might be some leftover material and since you know how to acquire the other missing material of inferior quality, and also have been taught by the client on how to manufacture the widget, you can produce a very convincing counterfeit

I have in the past. If you inspect it before install probably OK. Counterfeit is definitely a possibility but still probably unlikely.

I guess the question is why? Walmart or RockAuto have broad selections, good prices, and don't comingle third party goods in there warehouse. You could still get a return or something, but its also a low likelihood.

Advance Auto also does 20% off pretty frequently for $35 online orders shipped to home. Where I went most recently.

I've bought cabin & engine air, fuel, oil, fridge water, and vacuum filters from amazon. No issues. Make sure to give everything a good inspection upon arrival.

I wouldn't but it's your money and your engine. Buy online sure if I know that the company is selling quality well known aftermarket units. Think about it is it worth saving two or three dollars on a filter hoping it's not a counterfeit. Have I bought oil filters online, I sure have? At the time I had two Volvo's that used the same filter so I would buy Mann Filters in packs of ten from FC Groton now known as FCPEuro to save a few bucks over the dealer. I only have one Volvo now so I just buy the filter at the dealer for the once a year oil change. I buy lots of parts online just not from Amazon or Ebay. Rock Auto and PartsGeek are my main two go to's for non oil filter auto parts.

And you then have to export them, list them on Amazon, etc. I hear you, but it quickly turns into a business more than a scam! I am not really hearing people talk about actual experiences with fake filters. You?

I’ve bought filters on Amazon for many years. Only 1 time I had one get delivered with a dent in the side. It was replaced without an issue.

I would watch where it’s shipping from though. Look were it actually ships from. If it says “sold by Amazon & ships from Amazon” I wouldn’t worry. If it has a 3rd party listed as the shipper I’d probably pass.
