Yay or Nay: buying oil filter from Amazon

The only filters I buy from Amazon are Kohler filters for my ZTR . I don't buy enough automotive filters to make it worth my time . I live 15 minutes from Walmart , O'Reilly , and Auto Zone . I pick one up as needed .

It's probably fine but I tend to avoid it for certain things like spark plugs and OEM parts. Amazon is typically my last resort on auto parts these days.

Purchase multiple Purolator P1, Red and Tech TL from Amazon, all the filters legit and in new condition. Last Red, the box the L14610 in was a tad damaged but filter itself in new condition. So, I've had no problem buying filters from Amazon.

Nay. I used to buy a ton of filters from Amazon, and so many of them I had to return due to dents and the filters looking like they were dropped out of a plane.

pay attention to who is fulfilling your order (or where you are actually buying from)...I've bought ACD filters on Amazon from the AC Delco store when their price was better than RA and haven't had issue with any of them...

that said, I usually buy mine from RockAuto.com

Some members here got a good deal on ecogards from amazon and I'd buy those if they were in my size.

I would be wary of buying a premium filter like a M1, due to counterfeiting. No issues buying "jobber" filters because where's the economic advantage?

Same thing with spark plugs, I'd buy copper plugs on Amazon but probably not Iridium/ Ruthenium.

It hasn't come up really as I get most of my filters from RA on closeout for about a buck each. Scale the shipping quantity to minimize postage fees per unit.

Agree. The EcoGards on Amazon are around $2-$3 shipped. Cheaper than even Supertech. PremiumGuard filter for that price is a good deal. For a 5K oil change, arguably the best deal out there, shipped to your door free. Especially if you're helping out a family member, neighbor, etc.

I've bought several OEM Hyundai/Kia filters on Amazon. All have been genuine. There are ways to see if they are fake or not. Just watch who you buy from, their feedback, where it comes from, etc. Just like with all purchases.

They ship filters in a poly bag unless shipped with other items; then possibly in a box. I have purchased several filters from AMZN (shipped and sold by AMZN) that came in poly bags and were dented with damaged filter boxes. I send them back for replacements. If you can, buy filters locally.

Would you buy an already opened filter from WalMart?
I got no problem with it. Not like it is a jug of milk that spoils. Unless it is one of those premium filters that have the tamper seal on the box flap, most of the other filters are easily openable and should be inspected anyways before buying. I have seen plenty of people to include me, open a filter, finger it and put it back in the box and back on the shelf.

Buying online might be fine but not from Amazon as risk of counterfeit is pretty high.
I've never seen a counterfeit on Amazon, and counterfeits are generally easy to spot. I know for oil that most of the jugs these days have anti-counterfeit QR codes printed on that are single-use and need to be verified directly on the maker's website.

For example...

The key is to have an original on-hand with which to compare, then it's trivial to spot the fake.

Another example, in the case of Toyota/Lexus, they put high quality holograms on their boxes, as well as there are other ways that eg Car Care Nut talks about in one of his videos.

Amazon resells returns, so if there’s evidence of opened packaging, watch out. This shouldn’t stop you, just inspect what you get.
Lol that's the only downside to purchasing filters from Amazon. Due to their green earth policies, a lot of the flimsy boxes are delivered in the flimsier padded envelopes and are usually pretty mangled. The filter somehow survives, and if not, Prime returns are very painless.

let's say you're a factory in chynah and someone puts in an order for you to produce 10k widgets, after the order is fulfilled there might be some leftover material and since you know how to acquire the other missing material of inferior quality, and also have been taught by the client on how to manufacture the widget, you can produce a very convincing counterfeit
A lot of the times these are actually just real filters, sold under a different brand. Common practice. China likes to make cheap clones, rather than expensive counterfeits. More profitable that way. Literally what Amazon is :ROFLMAO:

I have in the past. If you inspect it before install probably OK. Counterfeit is definitely a possibility but still probably unlikely.

I guess the question is why? Walmart or RockAuto have broad selections, good prices, and don't comingle third party goods in there warehouse. You could still get a return or something, but its also a low likelihood.

Advance Auto also does 20% off pretty frequently for $35 online orders shipped to home. Where I went most recently.
Not to nitpick, but if you order from WallyWorld online, there are actually a lot of 3rd-party sellers on there and the item is not direct from Wally himself. Same with Amazon. You just need to check who the actual entity is fulfilling the order. Everyone thinks Amazon products all come from the same place, but there are 3rd-party sellers, and they all have seller feedback ratings.
