XMart Cheap Dino QS HM no API or Supertech w. API?

Hi all,

So, the cheapest name brand dino at my Walmart right now is Quaker State High Mileage at $11.50/jug and the cheapest period is Walmart SuperTech at $10/jug.

Quaker State High Mileage claims to meet at least SM reqs on their website. Supertech has the symbol. The standard advise around here is to run the cheapest api rated dino.

What's the deal with Quaker State High Mileage? Is this stuff going to eat my engine? I don't really need a HM formula, but I grabbed name brand over supertech in a hurry and I'm not sure about using non API rated oil. Thoughts?

This is for a 231k 98 Civic on 6mo OCI and manual says at least SJ rated. Not burning oil, so don't really nead HM formulation.

IIRC the Quaker State High Mileage is marketed at older car owners without warranty concerns, so they didn't bother certifying it or something like that.

Got a Fleet Farm near you? Resolute oil is $1.35 a quart ($6.75 a jug)

I have 5 quarts of it in my 2001 suburban right now... great oil for a 5/6k run (it's made by citgo and has GF4/SM)

If not just find the cheapest SM/SN oil you can find and run it.

Here are the latest Product Data Sheets for the Super Tech High Mileage oils.They seem to be very good oils and have really good add packs.

Supertec works fine but not really much reason to go cheaper than Pennzoil conventional. Its barely more expensive with plenty good specs and additives

+1 Theres always something better than ST and you only need to pay $1.50 more to step up from it conventional or synthetic. Theres no reason anyone should really buy it unless you dont care about better add packs.

Super Tech has been used by several here and has shown very good used oil analysis too.I have used ST many times in the past in a 93 GM and it has around 225K miles and the only major work done has been the replacement of the intake gasket.It uses little if any oil between changes and there is no sign of sludge.

ST should do just as well as any of the others for most and at a cheaper price.

I also like the Mobil Clean formulas and have been using them for about a year.They have started adding titanium to their add pack to replace some of the zinc that has been reduced over the years.

The titanium bonds to the metal surfaces in the engine and creates a layer on the metal to help protect it.

I dont know how SN looks but if SuperTech had some moly I wouldnt buy anything else.

I dont have the PDS for conventional but the High Mileage does have moly and boron.

If 5w30 versions of their syn get that 80ppm I'll buy it again. I cant wait to see a PDS for it.

For 3-4000 oci Super Tech oil will work just fine and the money you save will pay for the filter. I would love to see 2 identical engines-one using nothing but Super Tech and the other using any other dino,tore down and the wear results noted. I would bet there would not be enough difference to worry about.

Thanks for they replies all. I decided to save the 20mi round trip into town and just went with the Quaker State High Mileage.

I have no problems with Supertech, but for a buck or two more I'll go name brand.

Not sure if I'll go with Quaker State High Mileage again. Having a third party certify the oil meets standards is a good thing.

The real question is how many miles you are doing in the 6 months time?

If its a low number or not much higher than the severe service interval any of the name brand conventional including suepertec will work most likely.

Still i wouldn't want to go much cheaper than Pennzoil conventional since it has all that yummy calicum and adds in it.
