WRT-54G suddenly not accepting wireless connection

It's about 5 years old. All of a sudden, no devices can connect to it wirelessly. Rebooting/power cycling does not fix it. It still works fine over wire though.

I thought maybe the radio has died on it, but it still transmits the SSID... it is just not accepting connections.

Any ideas?

are you SURE it's transmitting the SSID? Sometimes windows keeps the list of SSIDs after they have gone.

I bought a Belkin Surf on sale awhile back and made a few minor changes in the setup.

Paid about $35.00 for it and it works great for my simple needs.

You might want to try resetting it to default factory settings and reconfigure it.

Well, I'm running third party firmware on it (Tomato), so resetting it to default factory settings is not an option.

As far as if I'm sure it broadcasts SSID, yes. When I power it off, the network name disappears from the list. When I switch it back on, SSID reappears.

Maybe the transmitter is working but the receiver is toast. Or maybe the receive antenna is loose or broken.

Try changing the SSID and re-setting up the security on it. Having your system connecting to a "new" network. See if that works.

My wrt54gl did this a few weeks ago. I updated the firmware and everything worked perfectly again.

Tried changing the SSID as well as disabling all security features. Still same problem.

Try swapping out Tomato for DD-WRT and see if that makes a difference? LOL

I'm sure there is a way to reset the router to Tomato's default settings. All firmwares even 3rd party firmwares like Tomato and DD-WRT have this feature.

To do that he would have to roll back to original firmware then go to DD-WRT. I don't think you can go from Tomato to DD-WRT unless you've done it before.

Well, I gave up on it. Since I had an Asus WL-500G sitting around collecting dust, I just put it to good use, running Tomato of course.

Not true, I went from Tomatoe to dd-wrt. You do need to do dd-wrt mini first before you can do full (from stock).

Both my linksys died at about 5 years..

one the radio receiver died..

the second one the dhcp server wouldnt give out addresses or pull them from internet.

nothing fixed them.. i tried many things...

in the end I did as you did.. had a cheapo asus wl-500gu sitting around i got from newegg for 30$.. works great

oh i forgot to mention in the middle I also had a linksys wrt54g2 .. it only lasted 7 monthes before bricking.

no more linksys for me.. the new ones seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper made.
