Wrong filter?

I have a 2007 Mazda 6 2.3L Atx. I have had the spin on filter conversion done and back when I first got it I used what I found to be a filter equivalent: the Amsoil EAO33.

I found that by double-cross referencing the Mazda filter that came with the kit, to wix, then to Amsoil.

Recently I looked it up a different way and Amsoil now says an EAO57 is the correct filter (I use the same filter as a 2.0L Mazda 3 and looked it up using this route).

Thoughts? Should I change the filter asap? I'm due for my 60K service at about the end of the month and plan on using the 57, are there larger capacity options and how can I find these?

Have zero knowledge of your application or Amsoil stuff, just going by the filter numbers you provided - using the FRAM X-ref site, it looks like a standard 3614 fits in place of the EAO57. If such is the case, the 3600 and its friends (WIX 51315, MC FL400S, etc..) are the oversize replacements for it.

The EAO33 looks like a motorcycle filter.

Same thread/gasket size as the 57 and all.

Whatever the Amsoil number is for the 3600 (appears to be an EAO34{/url] )is the oversize replacement for the 57.

Yea I was on the wix site a while back and in the listing of what that filter was used in, Harley was right next to Mazda 3. And the specs for the eao33 and eao57 are really close.

So I guess I'll go with the 57 to be safe and that's what Amsoil says. What's the oversize equivalent of that? and how can i look that up myself?

Oh [censored], the 33 doesn't have an Anti-drainback valve. Gonna pick up a 57 and pop it on monday.

Like I mentioned above - the EAO34 shows up on the Fram x-ref chart as the cross for the 3600, which is the oversize (1.5" longer) version of the 3614/57.

If you're like me, with not much of an actual life

, you could spend a Saturday digging around the X-ref sites and cross back/forth between mfr's, comparing dimensions. The Fram site is especially useful for that, as they list "Competitors" at the bottom of their page.

From what the experts here say, that is not mandatory, unless the filter is mounted in such a position (open end down) that the oil can drain out of it.

But gravity works over time and I suspect the oil to follow that law and slowly make it's way back down until at equilibrium... I do remember the sales rep saying it had a valve that kept oil in the head so startup was easier but he never said whether that was the filter's ADV or one in the motor.

I'll pop Amsoil an e-mail about the 57 and alternatives now that they name an exact filter for my application.

For a big filter with a 20mm-1.5 thread and bypass, try a Pf 1177, L 10193, FL 813, STP 3950, etc. Watch the gasket size.

NO ... one is metric and one is standard. No threads are interchangeable between thread standards.

That's what I thought, so i figured I'd ask why he suggested filters that didn't fit...

I'm pretty sure the confusion is because 2.3's came in both metric and standard too, iirc.
