WRC EV rally car burns paddock to the ground and ends 1st days races.

Custom build race cars catch fire all the time, I'm not sure what's so surprising about it.

This thread is as intelligent as I expected. Good job everyone.
Teacher: “Class, how many custom built race cars result in Class D fires?”

Little Billy: “Only the EV ones?”

Teacher: “Correct!”

LOL- They might learn something from building and racing them which might help make putting out a fire easier when one of them goes up in flames. Or better yet, design them so they don't burn with that intensity. ICE evolved from racing, hopefully the EV will as well.

Heck, I mean if Canada can design and build nuclear reactors that are at least theoretically meltdown proof, from what I understand, thanks to Overkill’s great nuke threads, can’t we at least hold out hope for EVs that don’t risk barbecuing you?

One can hope. Keep in mind cost and profits/losses comes into play, and imo that might very well delay it from happening. Over the years millions of unsafe cars were built and the companies were well aware of it. Pinto comes to mind with a few others. I don't see EVs being any different. I mean because an EV is supposed to be clean and green, and environmentally friendly doesn't imply the company is totally ethical. I mean they already cooked the books on the range figures so they're following in the foot steps of the ICE makers. JMO ;)

Yes they are, WRC has an EV series of cars. The cars that burned are the Lancia Delta EVO-e. The "e" stands for electric.
It's WRX, not WRC. WRC is the World Rally Championship, which is different from the World Rallycross Championship.

Not in my garage.
Why not?
Well ok, I can see the fear. I’m not sure how many gasoline fires happen on new cars but we must admit this exposure for EV cars does not help the product.
I don’t know but think it’s reasonable that it may scare some people because it’s so dramatic.
I mean here is a brand spanking new Mercedes possibly burning up a home and nothing but steel left after the fire, “cause under investigation” quite disturbing and current news (no pun🙃)

Adding fuel to the fire this 2023 does have some type of recall on it involving the battery monitoring?
However I’m a bit thrown off by the report of the fire quickly brought under control once fire fighters arrived. I never hear that when lithium is involved.

Aftermath photos of the car, I’m not so sure I ever saw one with just steel remaining but I’m not someone who pays much attention to car fires. This one initially caught my attention due to the completeness of the burn.

They might of got lucky and caught the fire early. In any event that's good news.

You do know there brazillions of EVs and Hybrids in this area? I mean A LOT. We are land of fake environuts. They buy them and feel good for the worst reason to actually buy an EV (For Mother Earth)

Point is. I've never seen one burn. Never seen a house burn with one in the garage. I mean I know it happens, but wow.

I saw this which happened on Thursday, in Upstate NY. People can search for the article themselves. The shelter in place order has been lifted.

I’ve yet to meet the person that cites that for the reason of purchase though.

You must live a great place!

#1 reason there, is less time at the gas pump?
I've just never heard anyone talk about their EVs unless they mention how it drives or how much cheaper it is than driving a gas car per mile. I don't think I can recall any other aspect brought up. The only time it goes deeper than that is another car guy that actually happens to like EVs then it goes into many aspects of cars and usually doesn't stick to just EVs. I'm not saying there couldn't be people who bought EVs for environmental reasons, but the only people who have ever brought up environmental reasons to me is people asking me if it was a consideration from a person who doesn't own an EV. I think it's much smaller consideration for a purchase than some would think and since I've never had it come up in conversation with another EV owner I'm inclined to believe that wasn't a reason for purchase for most.

Obviously just an observation. I just hear this environmental reason as a target of why or why not EVs are a good choice. Regardless of what study or data is referenced to whether for or against, I just haven't seen this as a reason why someone bought an EV with anyone I have talked to personally.
