How does one set Java to automatic updates? I do not have any Java icons in my control panel (XP) or start-up tray. Could it be that it is not installed???

For XP Users.....

Click Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Click Java in Control Panel
Look for Updates

While there in 'General', you can also...
Click Settings
Click Temporary Files
Delete the cache there.

Fix? Meaning recovering the data?

http://www.piriform.com/recuva
Try that. I've used it successfully to recover about 85% of a directory worth of pictures I accidentally deleted. The key to recovery is that the less writes to that drive since the deletion, the higher the possibility to bet the files back.

When a file is deleted it is physically still there (until overwritten). The OS tells the file system to flag the file as deleted, removing it from the file allocation table or journal and the space occupied by the file is marked as available for new writes. If you run a recovery program before that space is written over you can sometimes get it back.

Thanks, but there is no Java icon in my Control Panel (?). Is it possible I don't have it installed? I have XP Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

I think you also need to click on the classic view in the control panel and then scroll down alphabetically to find the Java.

Thanks Drew. That site says I do not have a working version of Java on my computer. Apparently I am getting along fine without it - what benefits does Java bring? I would just as soon not install any programs that I don't really need.

There are a lot of sites that rely on it for special functions. For example, Rock Auto's catalog is java based.

I'll bet you don;t have Adobe either.

Minimal computer usage / travel doesn't require much in programs / applications. The more you use it's functions -- the more you'll need things discussed here.

My XP Java Control Panel reads....

General - Update - Java - Security - Advanced

Was/Is your Windows XP Internet Explorer loaded when either new or re-formated?
Do you keep your Window Automatic Updates activated?
Java Updated regularly?

My old system is Win XP SP3, version 2001.

I noticed for the longest time that my Adobe flash had no icon in the control panel, or anywhere else, and I had been updating flash diligently for a long time, finally a few months ago I updated to the current latest flash and viola! for whatever reason I finally had a flash icon in the control panel, why I have no idea as to why this took so long to happen.

About Java, you MUST be very regular about checking for updates, I have my Java console set to "check for updates every two weeks and notify me". But rarely does that work I usually manually ask an update check. WARNING: If you are behind on Java updates you are BEGGING for malware!

Mine says

General - Java - Security - Advanced

I don't even have administrator privileges on this work desktop. Everything is handled by IT. All I get is nags to reboot but I keep on postponing the reboot.

Just go straight to the java page and download the newest version and install it. It will overwrite/update any previous versions you may have.

So when this started doing its nasty, I probably would have held in the power switch to force shutdown - might still be too late though. Then attempt restart in safe mode.
This is what I was told anyway - is this the right thing to do?
If so, I wouldn't know what to try from that point, with the exception of buying a new laptop.

Triple:

Could you go over the procedures for reacting to a potential malware attack like this again.

Would you recommend trying to even bother with killing
.exe in the task manager or pushing and holding the power switch or just immediately pulling the power cord plug. What is your thought?

I would think the best line of attack would be to pull the plug IMMEDIATELY!

And when you go to start back up to deal with the malware after booting into safe mode what is the next step.

Thanks

Ah - since I'm on a laptop, I was thinking in terms of holding in the power switch because of the battery power - I should have clarified myself better. Honestly, I wasn't thinking of a desktop PC.

Well, I tried the Recuva program without any luck to get much back. I happened upon a PC repair place that wouldn't charge me if they couldn't fix it. They got the info back and all is well. I'm also trying out Chrome as a browser and maybe a bit more safety. We'll see.
Thanks for the replies and help.
