The city was called Koromo prior to 1959, when it changed its name to Toyota to honor the name of its largest employer, Toyota Motor Corporation.
This is similar, though different, to Oldsmar, Florida. Ransom Eli Olds actually DID own that town, or at least the land from which the town was created.
