concerns about AI; what scares me

People seem to think they are the end all be all permanent rulers of this planet, just like the dinosaurs thought before, and like reptiles thought before the dinosaurs. We are just another cycle. Someone/something will eventually replace us. The world may not end, but humanity might.

Humanity is well on its way down that path.

The hype surrounding AI, and appetite to offload thinking, never mind critical thinking, to machines will only accelerate the process.

Sadly, Idiocracy is not a fictional film, but an actual blueprint for some.

Yeah, the concept is far from new, but OP is acting like he found a fountain of hidden knowledge or something.
Yes, but it is actually happening now. I googled AI vs AGI because I didn’t know what AGI was. If it gets to that level, bad things could definitely happen.
I’m against AI based on the consumption of resources vs the benefits. The extinction of the human race is a secondary concern.
The Northeast power grid is shaky, and no one wants power plants anywhere near where they live.
Now, because of AI, we can suddenly get multiple nuclear plants approved. Where was all this investment in new power when we had rolling brownouts? All because of money.

It all sums up to the government tracking all people that will be micro-chipped (like the family pet) and identification (scanning) of all your spendable assets (purchasing), medical info. criminal records etc. as I saw in a book published long in past predicts. kind of funny all the folks that were against power plants, dams (hydro) ,nuclear, and other electrical points of generation overnight changed their thinking.

Real people are already ( right now- look it up) addicted to AI girlfriends and/or friends. Addicted to “people” who are not flesh and blood. The AI “entity” is telling these people what to do. It’s only going to get worse.

Exactly- coal fired plants were shut down here in New England, and nothing was done to replace that power. Bit that was just for working people to have electricity.
Now the huge capital companies want their AI servers, so we can start building nuclear again. What the actual heck?

DARPA has been behind developing small, local, nuclear for years. The Air Force has been forerunner on the project and have a working model (from a Canadian company) planned for testing installation as soon as local hurdles are completed. One is planned for Joint Base Anacostia/Bolling inside the District of Columbia in the near future. Living 5 miles away I am not concerned.

Nobody needs microchip when a coupon or cashback of $50 will be able to sign them up for some membership. If $50 is not enough you are likely a high value individual, so $200?

You or I do not know what AI has access to. Nor do you or I know how it will process that data and especially the results AI will come up with.

As a veteran of computer analytics, I can tell you findings depend on many variables, not the least of which is the algorithms running.
You have exact control of what AI has access to. If you don't it is your fault. This is the same as hiring a new grad and not having exact control of what he is authorized to do and let him destroy your company.

AI can interpret all it wants but in the end you the human / manager / owner has to keep the access right to reasonable limit or it is your careless mistake, just like hiring a 16 year old and give him the key to the vault and the authority to empty out the company bank account.

Software can have bugs too, that's why you need human to review the result and correct those mistakes. Same will happen with AI.

Saw my first A1 baby in a commercial.
I won’t miss Hollywood actors in the coming decade either. They are concerned.
Zoom in on the fine print at the bottom of the screen

I mean, yeah, but the ultimate owner of such tech is going to be a sociopathic narcissist as they're the type who winds up in charge of big companies in the US. Imagine Steve Jobs 2.0 directing AI that an all lettuce diet is good for everybody.

And if the end user just leases AI, or buys a share, or whatever, the Terms and Conditions of use won't conflict with the nutjob's beliefs.

We'll be on an all ketamine diet.
