Some savants show it in the knowledge of oil

It makes you wonder about the process of learning.

I'm learning to play guitar and there is an incremental development of skills, such that what was once a big conscious effort becomes effortless and subconscious. Then your mind can focus on the next area that needs improvement. Yesterday I played through Metallica - Enter Sandman at my guitar lesson and played it near perfect on the first attempt (after a week of at home practice). I couldn't have done that 3 months ago. The music just came out with little effort, and the couple of small mistakes I made were because I had misread the manuscript.

How does the savant, in many cases, appear to bypass the learning process and go straight to expert? I can sort of see how that can happen with mathematical skills which are "all in the mind", but what about the pianist? Fine motor skills and muscle development are important there - how can that come out of nowhere?

Well, I'm sure they have to have the basic or advanced motor skills to begin with. It's not like "MiniMe" is going to be able to duplicate Jordan on the basketball court after watching NBA highlights. I would think that this would be more an organizational or formatting characteristic then anything else.

I guess my contracu injury as a youngster just wasn't good enough

keith, I feel your pain with regard to learning the guitar...I've found that I loathe structured lessons, and have been self teaching for 20 years. It's satisfying when someone says "Is that...whatever"?

Still waiting for the savant to emerge.

Abrupt transition moment;

from banging on a guitar to K-Mart undies.

Are evil forces at work within this thread?
