Wow, 20k-30k OCI with dino. 400k on the odometer

Yeah and never changed any other fluids! I can't really bash the guy, he got 400k miles out of the car! He got his money's worth for sure.

I've read the dry starts thing, but one of the posters recommends filling the filter with oil before installing it so. But yea, that's miraculous! Any take on what dino oil he was using? :) surprised he didn't mention it....cause whatever he used is some good stuff....

Probably the cheapest stuff he could find. I doubt he'd pay for a premium oil considering no other maintenance was done to it.

Exactly, no way to substantiate that claim.

No way that long on dino oil. Dry starts when changing the oil? That's not true right?

I can't see myself going longer then 5k on dino

It's a 5 year old car. With 400k miles and 30k OCIs, he's changed the oil 13 times. That's more than twice a year. Big deal. Just shows we make too much out of miles and too little out of the time between Oil Changes

Something is fishy about this story. I ain't buying it completely. There may be some truth to it, but I don't believe it all. 400k on dino at 30k OCIs without changing any other fluids? If it is true, he got lucky. And remember, his driving style must be at least like 95% highway which is certainly not typical of most drivers.

I should add, I have NO problems with dino oil but you aren't gonna find me running it past 5-6k.

I agree. When I was younger, broke and less concerned with maintenance, I took a 92 Cavalier to over 150k on 10 oil changes or less over a 9 year span. Most were whatever house brand dino was on sale, and a few Maxlife OCI's at the end. Gave it to my brother who was worse on maintenance than I, and he traded it in at 192k. Car still had all original fluids other than oil, original clutch and tranny, and still got 27MPG and started everytime. I hated that car, but drove it because it was a wife hand me down, but I wish I would have kept it as a beater just to see how long it would run.

I think we sometimes overthink this OCI thing as well. I want to keep my cars running strong, but so many out there do so little to their cars and they still go with no problems. I'll take the guy at his word, and the car is probably running okay with that many highway miles. But on this board, if he took the valve covers off, we'd probably all freak out due to a few sludge deposits or some varnish. Doesn't mean the car isn't still running good as an everyday driver.

Don't we usually see sludged packed engines and pending engine failure around 20K-30K mark with conventional oil and even sometimes with synthetics? On the other hand this guy apparently was driving over 30K miles every 6months. But that part alone sounds like baloney. Sounds like a synlube type claim lol. Oh yea typically an engine would use 1.5-3 qts in 30K miles. Was he adding oil or just running it 2 qts low?

True if he was topping off oil then it would naturally extend the safe time of an OCI

Consider the fact there are legions of vehicles that do have issues that we never hear about on this forum or personally, with little to no maintenance. The random story you hear about like this Scion Xb are the exception. In addition, the Scion Xb's 1.5L is very likely not hard on the oil at any time.
