would you patronize a restaurant that had you prepay or credit card before your meal?

I have no issue with running a tab. Not sure why anyone would. And yes, I can afford to eat wherever we choose. A credit card on file then you order whatever you like for as long as you like. Square up at the end with cash or credit. Not that difficult.

alot of the places in Las Vegas required either a deposit or a paid in full before dining.

we had to prepay in full at è by Jose Andres for the tasting menu and it was $1k for my wife and I with the wine pairing.

Im fine with it.

They wouldn't be charging you ahead of time. They would be preauthorizing your card for an amount above the expected bill and then finalizing the total at the end with your authorization, you can add the tip at that time. It's no different really than a deposit on something you rent, or a core charge on an auto part. We just had a thread about paying at the gas pump and that is exactly what happens when you pay before filling. Around here you even need a credit card to hold a tee time since so many people don't show up and most courses are packed.

This.

Dine and dash is only a problem at places with table service, the kind of places that pay their servers $2 per hour.

Online orders and takeout also require prepayment.

There are some places, such as Panera, that are 'hybrid' table service, Panera being an example of this. You pay at the counter, or a touch screen, then someone brings the food to your table.

Even some high end restaurants that require reservations now require pre-payment when you book the reservation, albeit for a different reason (mostly to compensate for no-shows)

Depends. I've seen some online options for takeout where it can be prepaid through a credit card. Maybe even a gift card. But one casual dining chain has an online option to pay at pickup time. Whenever I've picked up I never got anything until it was paid for. Same for a few pizza places. It's not that different than ordering by phone and then paying at pickup time.

There are quite a few moderately priced restaurants where it's order and pay up front. A lot of casino buffets do it that way, although I've also been to a few that gave a check at the end. I guess Sizzler was doing order and pay since the 70s. I remember getting in line to order and then taking a number to my seat. We had an independent steakhouse that also had ordering at the front. That's also pretty common with pizza, where you order first and then take a seat. Some of the oddest were soup and salad bars where it's about picking up a plate first, getting the salad ingredients, pay the cashier, then finding a seat. Then there's stuff like soup, bread, or dessert past the cashier. It always seemed odd walking back to the salad area. How do they remember if anyone paid? I doubt anyone keeps an eye on everyone.

I'm sure almost everyone has been to a restaurant where it's order at the front and then they give you a number or something to find you.

Without going political this is really not different than thieves in retails in low income area. Stores will eventually close even if you force people to pay first or go self service, take out only. What makes you think armed robbery won't happen when they pay you cash first?

Regarding to prepay, if they do that to everyone then I'm ok. If only to some people then I won't like it. We start seeing places that do no cash (card only) and prepay, that's a good trend as it reduces robbery and tax evasion. They probably assume that if you won't use card or phone payment then you are likely not their target customers anyways.

Denny's got into trouble in the 90s because several franchises seemed to require a prepay for black customers.

Don’t forget about the black Secret Service agents at Denny’s....

That was item (A)(10). But they weren't Secret Service agents. They were uniformed Secret Service officers.

10. The evidence and testimony would further establish that on April 1, 1993, the same day the Original Decree was entered, a group of 21 United States Secret Service officers (7 African- American and 14 white), in uniform, drove to Annapolis, Maryland early in the morning to prepare for a trip by the President of the United States to the Naval Academy. The officers stopped for breakfast at a Denny's Restaurant in Annapolis. Six African- American officers sat together at a table, and the other officers sat elsewhere. The six African-American officers who sat together did not get served in the 55 minutes they were in the restaurant; the other officers, including an African-American officer sitting with white officers, did get served.

If the food and service is good, I couldn't care less if I pay before or after. The server gets the tip afterwards if service is good and if there's a problem with the food or service, take it up with the manager and they'll comp you like any other restaurant. When I was a server I never had a customer leave without paying and they were few and far inbetween but the actions of management varied. Some places will just comp the food, some places will require the server to pay for it and that's a ****ty feeling. Overall, as with anything, the garbage actions of the minority causes the change to the majority. Lots of bars already require folks to start a tab already.
