Would you let someone borrow your car for $40

Anyone can drive your car in New York? It’s called permissive use.

If your insurance agent is telling you different, tell them to review the law.
Yeah my policy and most policies make you list all the drivers in your household. You can loan to a friend. My state requires SR22 insurance for really bad drivers that goes on top of the regular policy. (Having the friend use it commercially and pay for the privilege almost certainly voids the coverage, however.)

OP was right to say no. "Friend" was going to drive 80 mph with the trailer swaying, radio blasting, eating mcnuggets out of his lap and getting the steering wheel all greasy from same. "Friend" should have bought name brand OE sized tires of the correct load range for his tow rig. There's a reason that stock, is stock.

These days seems like I give an inch and he takes a mile

That’s the state of the world man. It’s getting more and more evil. People expect everything and are thankless in return because they worship themselves.

Don’t feel bad for denying the request.

Speaking on that topic… I’ve been wanting to level/lift my truck. Until last week when I had to find my wife’s van in a parking garage that was 6’8” clearance. It will be staying stock height because I ain’t lugging a gas can up 2 floors for her by hand!

And yeah… other than me only my wife, my mother, and my wife’s best friend are the only people who have driven my truck.

I also have a Chrysler Pacifica that I use for road trips. It’s sits in a garage that’s 20 minutes away from where I live when not in use.

This past winter this same buddy asked if I could help him move a dresser out of the blue. 6pm on a Wednesday. Mind you I work til 9pm. My truck was out of commission due to a bad starter so he brought up the idea of me getting into my van to help him move a dresser that he just needed to do tonight. His truck couldn’t go because it started snowing and his 4wd didn’t work. He expected me to get off work at 9pm, drive 20 minutes the opposite direction to get my van, 45 miles to him, another 45 to pick up a dresser, drive 45 miles his house, then I’d have to drive back 45 miles to put my van back and get into my car to go home.

See at some point it just becomes excessive. I have no issues helping but I’m not going to inconvenience myself to that extent.

Heck one time he asked if he could borrow my floor jack do replace an axle seal I said just bring the car to my house and I have all the tools here plus the parts store is 5 minutes down the road. He said no my garage doesn’t have heat(dead of winter). He expected me to lift my 120lb floor jack by myself and haul it 25 miles to him.
Sounds like a friend you really don't need.

a friend asked to borrow my truck for a 200+ mile round trip tomorrow and offered $40. When I declined he got pissy.

So here’s context:

I’ve got a buddy who sells trailers. He has his own 3/4 ton diesel truck but it’s old and showing its age. Went all winter without 4wd. He just got 4wd fixed and now has a vibration issues after installing new tires(oversized off road). Likely just needs road force but he doesn’t want to fork over the money.

He’s got someone who wants to buy a trailer next weekend. He offered to deliver the trailer 1.5 hours if the deal could be done tomorrow. The buyer agreed.

My buddy, who knows his truck vibrates and doesn’t want to risk shaking the front end apart, asks if I can *call into work tomorrow to run the trailer for him*. Yeah no I only get 2 weeks of vacation per year. So he asks if he can borrow my truck instead. Still no. My truck is a 2nd vehicle and will just be sitting in my driveway tomorrow, but 200+ mile round trip is extra wear & tear on the truck that doesn’t need to be. Not that I really care about wear it’s the principle. I get absolutely nothing out of this deal other than vehicle wear. It’s not even about the money either. I’d run the trailer for fuel and a hot meal if it was my day off.

Mind you I have a 1/2 ton pick up and it’s a 3700lb trailer. Well within tow rating but still extra strain on its 150k mile driveline. I just don’t get it. Last month he asked if I could pull a 4k lb deck over from the bottom of an icy driveway because his 4wd didn’t work. The only way up and out is just speed and momentum. Definitely gonna strain the transmission, might even blow it up. After working an 10 hour shift outside in a snow storm. Even if I was paid money I’m not gonna do it under those circumstances. Too much risk, not much reward.

He’s been talking about buying another truck for this type of stuff but he’s after oddly specific/expensive trucks that he can’t easily afford right now. I brought up the idea of picking up a cheap $10k half ton just for local work but he says he only wants a $60k 2019+ Ram 3500 Longhorn Megacab or a $40k 2018+ F150 Limited.

Does anybody else thing this is insane? Buddy always wants to rush stuff. A lot of these issues could be avoided if he just planned things out a few days but it’s always now or never. He wasn’t like this til he got into the trailer business. And the cherry on top is buddy lives 35 minutes away from me so whenever I go help out it’s over an hour drive round trip.

I loaned my car out to a friend when I was young. He hit a deer and almost totaled the car. He paid for repairs but the car was never the same.

$40?!, nah, don't need the $$.
Just take it buddy, keys are in it. just put some fuel in it before throwing it back in the dooryard.

Most insurance will cover it for anyone that has permission, unless you have a broad forum type.

I'd not loan my cars, but the junk pickup sure for the correct amount and terms, the terms would be written out and we'd get it notarized.
If it breaks down the person would pay for the towing home, the rent would be the same as what an outfit would charge for rent. And it would all just be good luck, I have zero trust in the pickup, think it needs one fuel pump replaced, and never know what else will crap out when you need it for something. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Your answer is “no,” and it sounds like the right response to me. You do not need to explain yourself, nor do you owe him this.
Considering it’s a truck and will be towing and not a short distance and you won’t be in it….

My fathers experience with the neighbors was
1. Tools returned broken
2. Snowmobile trailer was borrowed and they proceeded to pile it with rocks and gravel so the frame sat on the axle causing damage.

And these weren’t bad neighbors, need to be careful you can afford to loose whatever is borrowed out.

Absolutely. And there is a big difference between offering and being asked/coerced in loaning.

I said it before, I'll say it again:

- If you can't afford to lose it - don't lend it.
- If you lend it - expect it to be lost.
- If it's not lost and gets returned to you on time and in good condition - enjoy the nice suprise.

Each of the kernels here -the user/expected truck/low pocket money offered etc.- sure hit people's nerves...many through experiences.

Rmay635703's dad's quote reminded me of a joke.
"What do you call a guy who loans his tools out? .....A SAW LOSER"
Thank you, thank you vehrah much.....
