Would you drive around with a deployed air bag?

Granted I grew up driving cars without air bags. But now the air bags are part of the whole crash thing and without them imo a car isn't safe to drive.

Well maybe on a farm to go fix a fence would be ok. Definitely not on city streets.

I present to you this. After the bag deployed they used a knife to remove the bag so that the car could be driven.

Does the seat belt work? Usually the pre-tensioners fire with the bag.

I personally would not, but there expensive to replace - usually the bag, the seat belt, the sensor in the bumper and the controller either needs to be replaced or EEPROM cleared. Many thousands dependent on the car.

I would at least replace the bag cover with a fake just for the optics. I would have no problem driving that, back in the day before cars even had seat belts or collapsible steering columns people drove around every day.
The first couple of cars my family owned that came with lap belts, my Dad removed them. Many years later at age 78, he caught a ticket for driving without buckling up. Different strokes for different folks.

No, personally, I would not.

That said, I used to work as a Quality Engineer at a plant that manufactured airbags and seatbelts. We made seatbelts and airbags for most every major auto company in North America and our sister plants made them for auto manufacturers in Europe, Asia, and South America.

Among the products we made was an "airbag delete" module for the driver position. I was essentially an airbag without the inflator and airbag cushion. A block of foam was put in place of the cushion and inflator, to maintain shape of the cover. At the time, Mexico did not require airbags, so the airbag delete module was installed in the steering wheel, on cars that were made for the Mexican market.

I'm curious, is the steering wheel out of round? It is very common for the force of a driver airbag deployment to deform the steering wheel.

What did the customer bring the car into your shop for? Is it safe to assume that it isn't for an airbag replacement? :sneaky:
