lets say you were considering making a car purchase. you find what you want 40mi from home; seems like a good deal, but you want to do better. so you find the EXACT same car 220mi away for almost $1K less, do you go for it? or, do you use it as leverage w/ your local dealer?
BTW, you wouldn't be going to either of them for warranty or service, both are too far away. this is just about the deal.

Yes, I did. I took a bus 300 miles to save about 2000 dollars and get the exact color/trim/powertrain we wanted on our Highlander.

Of course, I'd stop by a local dealer first and see. But in my case, I took a Greyhound there, got picked up at the depot, drove home, and wasn't too worried as it was a Lexus dealerhship.

Over here, 220 miles would only cost me 50 litres of fuel with my truck...which is about $15 USD. So yup, I'd drive 220 miles to save $1,000!

I drive 170 miles every couple of weekends just to see my girlfriend for the weekend, then 170 back. I also end up spending money while I'm there. What am I thinking??

that's what I'm thinking, it'd be a huge thing to schedule. besides the drive, I'd be stuck in an out of town car dealer (you KNOW it always takes a few hrs)and I'm fearful of them trying to dicker on the trade.
after the time, fuel, food, I don't know if its worth the hassle.

It is indescribable how perfect that response was.
I just bought 5 quarts of Castrol Edge and a K&N filter. Lol!

When I bought my last new car from a dealer, there was a dealer on fleabay offering the EXACT car for about $1500 less. Unfortunately, that lower price dealer was about 600 miles away. I asked them to fax me a letter offering me the car at that price less any transportation costs to my location. Then I brought that letter to my local dealer and told them to match the price or I'd have my new car delivered to me from North Carolina sight unseen.

They matched the price.

I have paid more in total to have a new car odered just the way I wanted it and shipped to me. However, the way I wanted it was withOUT certain options, so you could say I deliberately paid more for less.
