would you buy a mint v70r with 243k for $1K?

Not too much to loose on $1000 except your $1000. However what are scrap prices these days? I recall something like $500 for a car if you drive to junkyard.

Scrap value around here is about $250 if you drive it in.

So if you can get a year or two out of it, you got your moneys worth.

I've read about that. Is it as simple as removing the driveshaft or do you dump the rear diff too?

If you plan on putting it back in, you just pull the driveshaft; that's what I did since mine was actually working when I removed it. I reinstalled it when I sold it. If it blows up on you though, I'd pull the rear differential and drive shafts as well, just to reduce the weight.

Since the parts are so hard to find, some guys pull it in the summer months just to save wear on the bevel gear. That was my intention, but I liked the way it drove better so I just left it off. Funny thing is, the guy who bought it from me ended up doing the exact same thing. My R is still going strong, original engine and transmission and it's just under 300K right now. The guy who bought it from me drives it hard, too.

UPDATE: It is a POS. Outside is very very nice with no rust at all. Just a couple dings in the driver side doors. Maybe 2-4 tops. The bad: passenger rear window is dead, stuck in up position. The check engine light is on. The engine bay is covered in oil. Owner claims the lower oil cooler line keeps blowing o-rings and he has 3 spares if I buy it, LOL. The A/C has a massive leak and is inoperable. He says it will hold refrigerant for a day and then it is done. The car is a complete dog of the line, I am confident my Civic would smash this car, which leads me to...the owner says he thinks the turbo has a problem and that the engine may have been replaced with a non R model. Upon my reluctant test drive it bucked hard repeatedly on the 3-4 shift until you let off the gas, then it engaged. Flooring it (literally) in 4th resulted in NO downshift and the speedo crawled upwards.

Thanks, but you'd be better off scrapping it fella. This thing is gonna cost a fortune to get up to par.

That's a huge bummer. It almost sounds like the Turbo simply isn't operating? This could be a very simple fix, or a very expensive fix. And, it needs a transmission swap or rebuild.

I'll be honest, if this were close to me I'd get there info from you and try to buy it as a project (because what I really need is another non-functioning Volvo). So, it's probably a good thing it's not close to me...

At a minimum it's worth parting out if the interior is in good shape.

Are you referring to this Craigslist ad describing "in good condition except dent over right rear wheel "?

If it was turbo it would have been very obvious.

The charge air pipe going over the top of the engine is a dead give away on a turbo V70

Thank you for the update, it's good to have closure.

I'm not surprised. I ran into this problem a few years ago when I was looking for a car for my sister. Sellers seem to think they can beat on a car, turn it into a total POS, than sell it for top dollar. The $39.99 car wash and wax special fixes all!!

At first I only wanted to spend $5k, but after looking at half a dozen POS used cars, and some with insane mileage on them, I said heck with it. Ended up paying $6,500 for a very nice Sentra with 55k miles on it from a local dealer a couple miles away from my house.

Next time she needs a car I'm not going to waste my time, I'm just going to lease her one.
