Would a magnetized dipstick work?

Probably, but it would also likely cause your dipstick to rub against the tube more when you pull it out. That could possibly screw up your readings by smearing the oil.

Drain plugs work well because they're at the bottom of the pan, and gravity makes the heavier iron settle out when the oil sits, allowing it to get closer to the magnetic field of the plug.

Couldn't be any worse than trying to read the dipstick now, I can't see the oil for c.r.a.p
