Could be worse
Used 2018 Silverado 2500HD with 102k. The yarn ball was on top of the filter as it sat inside the filter area/housing.

What did you replace it with?
The "wavey pleat" crowd can't respond for a while, they're in shock.
They buy all OEM
Wow, there must not have been any fresh air getting into that truck! Worst I have ever seen.

You're lucky the baby mice were gone.
A few days ago I noticed my hvac fan on my new to me 2013 Chevy Avalanche was blowing nice and cold but
wasn’t blowing very much air even on high speed so I replaced my cabin filter. The clogged up cabin filter was blocking probably 50% of the hvac air. Now after the initial cool down I can run the fan on low and it keeps the cab nice and cool.

Nastiest filter I ever changed was in a Sorento, I did it as a favor for a friend since I had one on hand (I drove a Sorento of the same model year at the time) and pulled out the nastiest filter I've personally encountered. The owner had 3 young kids and dogs that joined them for car trips.
