I thought this looked interesting, so I gave it a shot. It's a cabin filter with activated charcoal layer. This one has the honeycomb filled with carbon. The charcoal side looks a lot like the filters that go in my home air purifiers.

The GF, My Mom, and I all have a fair amount of Allergies.
the last couple years ( since Covid really) I've been using Bosch HEPA cabin filters. didn't notice a drop in flow that some have mentioned.

I can tell you from my own experience, the last time I changed the filters on my wifes car, the cabin filter was way dirtier than the engine filter. That had me scratching my head, but it did prove they do work at keeping the cabin air clean.,,
Most modern engines have the air intake roughly horizontal while the cabin air intake is usually in the cowl area between the wipers and the hood. It's more vertical so stuff can just fall in.

Its like inkjet printer ink and refrigerator water filters...Designed to continue taking your money many years after purchase! A Genius idea to make a company money!

Ah...I remember the good old days even back to 2003 my Sequoia didn't have one. You got all the dust smells etc. Good times.

My '07 Sonata was my first vehicle that I recall with cabin filter.

I can see where the filter being the way its lays in the car, possibly being easier for debris to just fall into it. But then again it doesn't allow water to just drip on the filter. And the engine filter draws alot more air thru it, then the cabin filter ever will. I bet people that live in really dusty areas , like the idea of keeping the dirt out of their interior. And in the big scheme of things, those filters are really cheap.,,,

i bought one of these to replace me rodent eaten one. i placed the charcoal area down . except for a funny perfume smell reported by many , its seems to work. i cant smell any trucks desiel exhaust like i did in the past. they also are firmer and don't flop around like oem and the fabric outside seems to help sealing in the box
