WORLD CUP 2026 THREAD

I have to say I haven't seen such a Brazil since they got their asses handled to them by Germany.

Also, quite surprised to see a bunch of red faced blond blue-eyed Scandinavian Northerners handle NJ heat better than Brazilians. One way or the other, the Norwegians were the superior team.

Not to mention, to be given two penalty kicks in one game at this level is quite unheard of.

PS: Just rewatched why they were given the second PK in the first place. While the first PK was well deserved - the second ?!? What a joke.

I didn't even know what I posted above, I was just guessing at the time. This is the oldest team Brazil has fielded in WC history

Don’t they spend a lot of time in saunas?

As an avid NHL hockey fans, my wife and I watch the USA vs someone, soccer and she was all hyped up to watch because of a couple soccer fans at her work. We both played as kids in a kids league, but how we soon forgot. We started watching and well....... could not do it. Slow drying paint. They need to add another ball, then it would be watchable. Maybe.
All sports have boring games/matches but If you watch the Argentina/Cabo Verde match and would still compare it to paint drying, soccer is definitely not the sport for you
+1

Sounds more like a fan of golf :sneaky:
Soccer after all is strategic game as any other that spans in two half and especially when the bet is very high as world cup or any continental cup (Euro, African, American).

Very often the team which scores first moves back in their half and begins to defense themselves more carefully which leave less space for the opposite team to pass the ball when attacking and makes is it very difficult for the opposite team to score and makes the result even. In soccer language that's called "the team tries to guard the result" for as long as possible.
That in most cases makes the game less interesting because one of the teams play less aggressively because they scored first and drew back all the players to protect their target better, so it's harder for the ogher team "to return the goal" and makes tge result even.

I’m only in favor of early USA goals

Only missed PK in reg time in WC since 1980 something? Ouch
I actually remember that game. France - Brazil, 1986, in Mexico.

It was the most elegant game I've ever watched, and I think it remained in history for that. If memory serves, there were no yellow or red cards, and there were I believe only two fouls (one of them was the missed penalty, it is true), over a grueling 120 minutes with the extra time.

Socrates, Careca and Zicco were playing on the Brazilian side, Platini, Giresse, Tigana and some others on the French one - I believe it is unofficially regarded as the most elegant game (at that level) ever played. The French visited the Brazilians' dressing room after the game, and they were all hugs and thanks.

Absolutely top notch game. If I had to rewatch one game outside of the 1994 championship - that one would be it.

Well, the leading car in a race does the same. And in the same manner - if the second car is any good, the leading one can't keep it up for long.

Guarding the result is a double-edged sword which works only to a point, when one of the teams has some clear advantage - physical, technical, or both. Or when the other team is running with one less player after a red card.
With equally skilled teams in similar physical condition - good luck passing the ball around and holding it while some monsters are fighting to get back.

France has a few things to say about guarding the result during their qualifier in 1993 for the 1994 championship. They were the clear favorites, played for guarding the result, and ended up not having to buy France <> USA airplane tickets in 1994 at all. What happened is etched in French sport infamy, but on the flip side it made them much better from there on.

Complete garbage call

Red card??

Bunker now guys
Because of that red card against Bosnia & Herzegovina according to the rules the scorer Falorin Balogun should miss the next game—in this case the tomorrow's game vs Belgium.

However, Trump had spoken with the FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Balogun is expected to play vs Belgium. 😁

Mexico is clearly the more agressive team, the rest being about equal. I see it quite difficult for England to hold till the end.
As we say in the old country - At home, even the walls help
