Wix racing oil filters

Bob was able to obtain very low wear figures using a FRAM oil filter and Schaeffer's MicronMoly motor oil. Well, Wix actually makes two different kinds of oil filters-oil filters for ordinary cars, vans, light trucks, and SUVs, and racing oil filters. I believe that Wix is a sponser of Winston Cup racing. A racing oil filter certainly has good oil flow, even if it may not filter quite as well as an ordinary oil filter.

I don't know if there is a Wix racing filter available for my car, but there surely is one available for the Corvette, and some other vehicles. Perhaps if somebody did not want to use a FRAM, but wanted an oil filter with good flow, you could use a racing oil filter on your car?

The problem with a pure racing oil filter is that in many cases they are only going to stop particles that are 60 microns and larger. I know that is the rating of the Ford racing oil filter, I bought one for my old 5.0 Mustang but never ended up using it.

I would at least want a filter that is going to stop 25-30 micron particles.

Here is some good info about the WIX racing filters: http://www.wixconnect.com/resources/forms/wixracecat2.pdf Apparently they offer filters with two different types of media. The T-71 media filters smaller particles but doesn't specify a micron rating. Both types sport VERY high flow numbers!

evilpeanut, when I went to the Wix web site, it said that they made racing oil filters but also racing oil filters for endurance racing. I would guess that the ones made for endurance racing would be more similiar to the oil filters used on ordinary vehicles but with more flow. If it is possible to find one that will fit and has adequate filtering ability, and great flow, maybe that is the answer.

I did a fair amount of wrestling with these questions myself. I am going to try the K&N filters on my new engine (I am about to fire up a street/strip Pontiac 455). My other choice would be a Baldwin HPG series filter but they are not available in my area. Ordering a handful online is no problem, though. I don't know the specifics on the Baldwin HPG flow/efficiency ratings.
