Hi Guys,

I recently bought two Wix Part No. 51522 to use with my GM LS1 V8. I bought the filter after some research and the positive reviews on it froma few people.

I was kind of surprised (negatively) to find some small metal shavings on the area where the filter gets screwed on, along with the area around the rubber ring.

I'm not talking about big chunks of metal, but definately some fine steel shavings left over from the machining/casting process. Has anyone else encountered such a thing with these filters?

I tried cleaning them up to the best of my abilities.

I see that very rarely, usually when someone gets the wrong filter and tries to screw it on is when I really notice.
but I do run a rag thru the threads on all of the oil filters I use just because I'm weird.

Of the box of Motorcraft (Purolator) filters I bought, I've found one of them to have that as well.

Hesitant to even use it.....

i use napa gold 1522 for the same engine and i recently started noticing the metal shaving clinging to the threaded area. I now run my finger in there and get em all off.

That`s sort`ve what I always do. I`ll take my finger wrapped in an oily paper towel and clean the treads really well before I install.

Yeah I usually try to hit the threads with a rag before installing the filter. A friend of mine actually takes a copper wire and runs it around the threads before installing. He says he sometimes gets a few shavings out that way.

Yea I think it's the same filter but this one MAY be a little longer.

Anyways, I dont wanna go thru the hassle of returning them so I'm just gonna get these cleaned up as much as possible.

call the WIX hotline and ask. they can give you some more info on this matter.

I've seen this as well on the typical economy level filters ....

I've used Mahle filters (Austrian made) OEM filters most of the time on my VWs and have never found this issue.
