Wix Filter Rusted Through

I have a 2016 Ram 2500 6.4 Hemi and have been using Wix 57060XP filters for years with no issues until now. When I got to work this morning I noticed a puddle of oil under my truck. After some investigation I realized the oil filter was leaking and I had lost about 2qts of oil on my 30 minute drive. I checked to make sure it was tight (it was) but not too tight (it wasn't). I did a filter swap in the parking lot and discovered the old filter was rusted at the seam. Checking my records, I installed this filter in December 2023 (8 months ago) and have driven 7000 miles (oil change interval is 8000 miles). Has anyone ever seen a filter rust through in 8 months?? Is this enough reason to switch filter brands? Or reduce the oil change interval to 6 months regardless of mileage? I live in CT and I know the stuff they spray on the winter roads is horrible for everything but I would not expect a quality filter to fail so quickly.

I consider myself extremely lucky that my commute is relatively short and I didn't lose enough oil to cause damage to the engine. And I definitely will be traveling with a spare filter and oil in each vehicle from now on...

That doesn't look like anything more than surface rust to me. Something else has got to be going on here. Any chance this was a double filter gasket situation, where the old gasket was left on the engine and this filter was installed on top of it?

That is crazy! Never seen a filter fail like that. Seems like the wall thickness is to thin for the job. I would change filter brands myself.

It is almost like the rust targeted a crack in the metal.

I've never seen an oil filter corrode (at all) before. That's not normal. I've used Wix filters for years without problems (and because of my low annual miles and filter change every other oil change) some have been on for a few years.

Was it rusting when you put it on?

I definitely think you should contact Wix. Think they'll want to see it. Could be a counterfeit. Could have been a manufacturing defect.

Thanks for all your responses, I will definitely reach out to Wix. I put a new Wix on today because that's what I had on the shelf and I have always had good luck running Wix on all my vehicles and equipment. Gives me some pause though knowing how close I was to losing an engine
That looks too clean a break all the way around the filter for rust alone. Did you cut it at some point?
No, this was new from the box in December and never touched until today. The rust is all in the seam

That was my first thought as well, but I couldn't understand how it would not leak for 8 months and then be catastrophically leaking all the sudden. When I pulled the bad filter off I made sure there was only one gasket. The gasket looks to be in good condition (no rips, lumps, etc) and the gasket surface on the engine is clean.

I didn't notice any rust on install but I can't say I inspected it very closely. I have been running exclusively Wix for about a decade, never seen this before.

That's a Made In the USA version also. Unless I'm mistaken, WIX shut down their USA manufacturing a couple of years ago, so maybe you got one of the last ones made where the workers just didn't give a F anymore, or it's really old and was sitting in a damp environment for a long time before you got to it.

Either way, please let us know what the company says and/or if you learn anything more.

I just checked my stash and I have a new Wix 57060XP, same part # as OPs, that I ordered from Amazon last week. Its label says made in the USA, so maybe it's new old stock. Also, it looks like a new filter should, no rust or any other weirdness. It's for my son's Jeep Renegade. I'm hesitant to use it now.

I'd use it. You are about as far from the rust belt as you can get. Just keep an eye on it.
