This is the biggest oil filter in the fleet at work. It's a Wix 57744XD (Xtended Drain) for an International School Bus with a Maxxforce engine. Really just wanted to see inside one of these XD filters, they seem to have a main element and a "bypass" element, the smaller of the two possibly for finer filtering? We run these about 6 months and/or 6,000 miles with bulk 15W-40 conventional oil. The pic of it in the oil drain caddy is next to a Ford FL500S for size reference. Enjoy the pics.

That thing **IS** huge!

The FL500S sized FoMoCo is the factory installed filter from a brand new vehicle, usually made by Champ Labs

Yep. It was off a new Explorer Police Interceptor. (I should cut that one up too...)

Cummins has used the stacked bypass design for a while. And that filter is big!

I've seen a oil filter for a Cummins ISM/ISL for a bus before, it didn't look that big. I imagine Navistar speced big filters due to soot loading, and the Maxxforce engines did use more EGR as a emissions control strategy instead of EGR + SCR.

We blow up EGR coolers so much it's almost funny. The oil is REALLY inked compared to the Cummins. Our Cummins buses outnumber our IC buses by a lot. The powers that be swore to never let another IC bus through the gates. They've been nothing but headaches and downtime.

The main element is. The smaller element is not.

We know this all too well. Thankfully we have extended warranty coverage on them, 10 years and 250k. That time is near over, and when it is they will be sent to the "spare row". In other words, no dedicated routes. Only use them when we have to.

Probably why Navistar teamed up with MAN, which is a part of VW. And the newest Navistar engines are rebadged MAN engines, just like a modern Detroit Diesel is an American-built Mercedes engine without the three-pointed star on it.

I've read that Cummins and Scania worked together on their fuel injection systems, and Scania after the Saab separation also became part of the VW juggernaut.
