First time ever C&P. Got a cheap $19 cutter on Amazon and it's great. Anyways here's a Wix 57055 filter removed from my 2021 2.5L Subaru Outback. 2,650 miles from January to June with M1 AFE 0w-30. To start off the louvers are atrocious. Barely a hairline open and many of them completely shut. Is this a common QC issue on Wix? Bypass valve has a sloppy/ stretched gasket. Media itself was rock solid. End caps were glued solid with practically no excess glue seen. ADBV rubber was in good condition. You know I think this filter was operating most of the time in the bypass mode due to louver issue. Just my speculation. Especially in the very cold weather this filter saw in MN winters for the first 3 months of the year. I got 2 more Wix filters with same part# in my stash I have to inspect but these filters are mostly all 1-2 years old from previous online orders.

In: Amsoil XL 5W-30/ Amsoil EA15K13 filter. I have a 6 pack of PG PG4612EX I plan on using after. While not 100% correct bypass psi spec for my engine 14-17psi is better than 11-17 psi of the Amsoil filter. Eventually I’ll find a case correct Subaru PG EP filter when they release later this year.Toss that and other two in the tall grass. Shoddy construction. What went on and in?
Here are some pictures. You’re right that they weren’t completely shut. However some were barely open. Looking at these pictures makes me feel better about the filter performing in colder weather. Not great but probably wasn’t bypassing as much as I thought. I checked carefully after cutting the media and noticed the baseplate wasn’t glued all the way.Yeah they don't LOOK great. But the pictures do make them LOOK worse. Some are open. None look shut completely as claimed.
Remove the media and post more pictures - I am not judging so quickly.
The MGSL and CQP have the correct bypass setting and are Subaru specific. Note the CQP is the shorter version.Amsoil

Add up all the area of the hundreds of louvers, stick 60psi on the other side, and you’d be AMAZED at how much oil will pass through that tube. Also, the bypass is 27psi on those filters, I believe. That is a LOT, so I highly doubt the reality of that filter’s performance is anywhere as bad as your assessment.
Not throwing stones, just talking @Nuclear_42 off the ledge. The can is nice and clean with no grit, and if you did a UOA and nothing was greatly amiss, I’d bet the cost of that filter your engine didn’t suffer any permanent damage above and beyond normal wear.
BTW, don’t throw those 2 new filters away, I will happily use them on my Impreza. I’ve only got about 5 NAPA Gold 7055s left. PM me and I’ll cover shipping![]()

They do if they are opened up well like they should be. If they looked even half choked down by looking down the center tube they get a reject from me. Solution - buy filters with holes in the center tube or an Ecore center tube.This, they never look great from above.
Assuming the louvers are opened, the pressure drop across that filter when using a PD pump is probably pretty minimal. Choked down louvers are not planned by design to enhance functionality. It's about the dP across the filter itself due the the flow rate and oil viscosity, regardless of the dP across all the other components of the oiling system. If there is too much dP across the media and center tube, then the bypass valve is closer to opening. If the louvers are really choked down, it's going to raise the dP across the bypass valve and could make it open sooner and more often compared to open louvers that don't increase the dP.Assuming the louvers are opened, the pressure drop across that filter when using a PD pump is probably pretty minimal.
