Wix 51372 (FL-820 equivalent) bypass location

I was looking at the Wix 51372 I got from Filter1 the other day and I noticed that it appears to have the bypass in the closed end, not at the threaded end.

There is no spring visible at the threaded end and at the closed end there is an approx 1/2" long 1/2" wide metal piece which has an oval shaped hole in the end of it through which I can see something that's black and appears to be plastic. This metal piece is spot-welded to the endplate by 4 spot welds.

The Wix 51515 (FL-1A equivalent) does have the threaded-end bypass as I expected.
 
You are right. The Wix 51372 does not have the Ford style, thread-end bypass valve. In fact I have not found a non-motorcraft filter (like the 51372) that cross references to the Ford 820S filter that does have this bypass filter location. If your filter mounts at a 45 degree angle, this might be an important feature, otherwise it may not. Even the newer black painted Wix line has the same bypass location as the older 51372 filter.

The Wix 51515 on the other hand does have the thread-end bypass, as well as a silicon ADBV, which the FL-1A does not have. As do many of the better non-ford cross reference filters to the FL-1A, like Mobil, K&N, and Wix...namely the Ford thread end bypass and silicone ADBV.

Since I value both these features, I use the Motorcraft 820S filter on my Escape and the Wix 51515 filter on my Club Wagon. But that's just me.
 
And yet the filter on the engine from the factory has an engine end by-pass valve and a silicon anti-drain....

Interesting that Champion would make the Ford style bypass for the filters they sell direct to Ford, but make the dome end bypass for the after market filter to fit the Ford.

You can also get a threaded end bypass on a Purolator L40017 (=FL299 and is long version of FL1A). Order from Advance Auto.
