Recently did some repairs.. Replaced my rusted out Exhaust System from the Exhaust Manifolds to the Tail Pipe along with new Cats and O2 Sensors..

Afterwards I tested it out with a 400 mile round trip that I do to get away and was amazed that I did it on a full tank with Gas to spare. I recorded 19mpg for my old Explorer.. This was in June with the AC on both ways the whole time, going with the flow of traffic at 90+ mph at times..

Cut to September and I only made it 382 miles before I needed to stop.. Bummer.. I lost about 2 mpg..

That's normal. It's always 1 to 2 mpg loss.

I thought the epa was going away. :ROFLMAO:
I hope not. I remember the brown smog of California back in the 1970s. Pittsburgh had the air pollution index on the 6:00 news. Now diesel engines are a another story. The DPF hasn't ever been reliable; one sensor (out of 17) can shut you down on a two lane mountain road (ask me how I know) with minimal notice. Something needs to give to at least make emissions equipment reliable.

At least where I am they have "anything goes" fuel in Spring and Fall that (coincidentally?) gives me my best ever MPG. The butane is allowed back in.

Coincidentally b/c I use less AC but the air is still thin and I'm not on my snow tires yet.

The air pollution in Pittsburgh was not due to automobile exhaust. It was due to the steel making industry, which is now GONE. All of the south side mills are torn down.
Still some coke making going on in Clairton PA. Recent explosion was in the news, if you recall.
Being in a valley kept that coke gas there for quite a while. Still some chemical plants running in West Elizabeth, and those smell HORRIBLE!
That plant was PICCO, and then sold to Eastman (yes, like the film) not sure who it belongs to now.

No doubt that auto exhaust contributed, but it was a small amount at the time. Many more cars there today than then, but the air is pretty good/fair.

Yeah lets get rid of it all then. We can start making our own clothes from the cotton we grow, and no more transportation yeah, lets go back to horses. Yeah back to the past with no modern nothing made from the nasty steel or oil products. Yeah those fun old days looking for fire wood and chopping it with stone axes and all the other easy stuff they had to do in those days. :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

Just follow up..

Did another weekend trip. A few things were different this time. I changed to 5W-40 from 5W-30 and I filled up at Shell instead of Amoco.. I also added Stabil 360 Marine at the recommended dose.. The weather was warmer this weekend, so I ran the AC at times but not the whole time..

I would think my mpg would be worse, but this time I made the whole trip home without stopping hitting 18.18mpg.. I'm going to chalk up my all time best of 19.18 mpg to summer temps making the oil thinner.. But this time I'm going to say Shell gas is better than Amoco.. :D

I lose about 2-3 MPG in my Civic when they switch to the winter blend so I’m really not looking forward to next week. They begin phasing it in here around Sept 15. At least the price will drop around 7 or 8 cents per liter.

I thought that maybe they had already switched over because the last few days my Civic was getting lower MPG. Then I noticed that the eco mode was off. The body shop must have hit the button when they cleaned up the interior for me

We have the winter blend here now and I’m seeing a substantial drop in MPG in my Civic now, more than a 5% drop. It doesn’t seem to affect the Corvette as much though
