Windshields that scratch too easily....

The windshield on my Accord is so scratched up. My previous Accord (2006) didn't have nearly as many scratches with over 130K miles. Is this a trend with newer cars? How do your windshields look? I keep it clean and only use the wipers when I need too.

My new car that is only 3 months old and has 3500 miles on it has 2-3 rock chips on the windshield. I'm actually a little mad about it. I attribute it to the ride height of the car, but my 15 year old car only has 1-2 chips, so it could be the quality of the glass as well? The scratches on the 15 y/o one are from the windshield wipers, but when it's clean, it's still very clear.

The new one has a layer of sound isolating material between the inner and outer layers of glass so I wonder if it affects the hardness of it vs a conventional windshield. I have comp on it though so when it gets bad enough I'll just call up the insurance since there's no deductible on the windshield.

Wiper scratches or is the windshield pitted? I've seen countless Pilkington windshields get pitted really bad.

The factory AGC glass on my Pilot still looks good; Accord's 9 yr old PGW glass has some light swirling; Infiniti's factory AGC is pretty pitted and needs to be changed soon.

Do you still have the factory glass?

I took steel wool to my new Civic windsheild to get the water spots and soap film off, worked good.

Its the factory glass. It has a couple of rock chips but lots of scratches from the wipers. And a couple of scratches from falling debris I assume (small branches etc)

Have you thought about starting a topic or a poll like "is your windshield cracked?" Rock chips on my wifes car, my car, my sons car, co workers car, his wifes car and my neighbors cars windshields have all cracked. 90's and up windshields look thinner if you ask me.

My Subaru is less than 3 years old and the windshield is already horribly pitted. I thought my wipers were bad and putting some new Bosch Icons on did help somewhat, but I finally figured out that the glass itself was just in bad shape. I have RainX spray to help with frost for my daughter's car since she parks outside (does make a difference), so I'm to try that on my car to see if the coating helps fill in some of the pits and makes it look better.

The word on the Forester driver's website is that Subaru started using cheap glass to save a few bucks, just like how they started putting cheap, nasty tires on their new cars. My OEM tires were absolutely brutal in modest winter conditions but I kept them until they wore out since I run snows, but I replaced the ones on the Impreza with General Altimax RT43s immediately since they will be on all year.

When washing the windshield of my '95 Subaru (only new car I ever got) I could see it flexing; say, about a 6" circle.
I don't know if this flexibility was good for the application (durability regarding common vibrations and/or impact resistance) of a function of cheapness.

I had an old E-100 Ford van and all was well. I caught a rock and got a new windshield. HOLY COW! the clarity was amazing.

I somehow scratched the windshield on my 2015 Accord in its first year using the wipers, a nice 6" scratch at the end of its stroke near the top of the A pillar. Thankfully it's not in my line of sight or I would have been livid. I've never seen that happen before, nor should it!

I'll post the glass manufacturer when I look at it again if I remember to.

Claying works as well, just use water instead of the spray lube used on paint.

The layer of plastic between the glass is to control jagged pieces of glass in the event of a broken windshield. The "sandwich" has been around for decades.

+1 for the above comment.

IMO, windshield glass is a wear item.
The Benz boys, way back when, were the first to embed a heating element in the adhesive surrounding the windshield glass, connected to the battery it softened the stuff so their windshields were field replaceable. Now, apparently, just about all of them are.

My body shop said that glass has become thinner for couple reasons. One is for weight savings. Also found out that the Insurance companies have a major $$$ invested in the glass companies. I Have went through more glass in the last 18 months than the previous 35 years and its on my 2010 plus vehicles:(

It was actually a coolant loop between the heater core and engine block - it was slick for its day. My parents had one in their W126 chassis S-Class. Subaru uses a heating grid underneath the wipers to do the same thing.

Both of those were better ideas than the Instaclear windshield Ford and GM used - LOF had the patent on it. And those were expensive windshields to replace.
