Windshield chip repair

I just noticed, for the first time, an auto parts store close to me selling a DIY windshield, chip/bulls eye repair kit. It cost less $15. Do these really work?

If the chip is very small, yes. It's basically an epoxy that will fill in the chip.

Most insurance companies will pay for chip repair with no out of pocket expenses.

Better to have it professionally done too for better results.

Not if you do not have FULL COVERAGE.
I have done this myself a number of times. Mine come out better than some loser on a street corner getting $80 from my insurance company. Thank you ,but no thanks. I trust myself a whole lot more.
I pay about $5 for a kit to fix 2 chips.

Chad8, Which brand/kit do you use?

They do work, ive used permatex and pennzoil branded, IIRC.

The pros have a whole vacuum apparatus, so Id probably use that if it is more of a small star formation...

Just had this done Tuesday by Safelight. No out of pocket fees. Called Monday and he was there first thing Tuesday morning. Took about 40 minutes or so. He vacuumed the car out which was nice. He also put an infared/uv light on the repair to help cure it. He said windshields have 3 layers with plastic in the middle.

Also said heat can lead the chip to a crack. Told me story where he went to repair a lady's van. He told her that he would have to move the van to the shade to cool down the glass. She told him, "you just don't want to work in the sun". She then touched the chip, he said he wasn't sure how much pressure she put on it and next thing you know he hears this loud crack sound. He said, "now you need a new windshield lady".

The car is a rental that is covered by my car's insurance. I do this kind of renting all the time, but the glass coverage is not extended to the rental.
I got a bull's eye yesterday and I don't want Enterprise to ding me for the repair. I just did the DIY repair and it looks as good as any professional repair I've seen.
