While driving today a piece of metal struck my windshield at its base. There is a bullseye on windshield but there is no damage to outside of glass. The damage is below the surface. My concern is with the defroster heat/cool cycles a crack will occur. Can a shop repair this by drilling the outside to inject resin into the star, or should I just leave as is. Car is a 2018 Audi Q5

With all of those lines coming out of the bullseye that is definitely going to spread. There are both size and location limits (or used to be) on what can and can't be fixed. If you're going the repair route, the sooner the better.

The answer is yes a shop could do that... at least I've had it done in the past.

That picture looks like there is damage at the center, are you positive there isn't a breach in the exterior glass? There appears to be a dark spot at the center of the star in the area of the crushed glass. I would double check it with a ball point pen or a small pick if you have one.

If there is a breach just go get the rain-x kit at Wally, it'll do at least as good a job as a shop.

See what a reputable glass shop says. I recommend not going to the place who's name starts with "Safe." I have two repair experiences with them and bottom line is they're half a$$ers.

You need that repaired, or better yet replaced. Doesn’t NJ have a cracked windshield law of sorts?
In Florida you just have to report it to your insurance company and they cover either or. There is a $50.00 deductible for the replacement though.

I have used the RainX repair kit on bullseyes and it works great if you get it right away, before any water or dirt can get in there but I dont think it will work on yours. You have to cover the whole repair area with a suction cup and draw a vacuum then let the resin flow in but it wont go up those spider legs. Check your insurance and get a good glass shop to look at it.

I had the resin put in my Subaru about a year ago. I have the Starlink cameras and they really work well. Even the quick and not so annoying beep that the car stopped ahead of you moved forward alarm is just right. didn't want to risk the calibration of new glass. So far has worked well in NorthEast 4 seasons.

I had a professional fill it with resin. Car really doesn't get used only for road trips. Next trip to Florida in February if Covid does not prevent us. I will update if it should spread. It is at base of windshield and not visible from in the car. He did a really good job getting resin in the spider legs. Time will tell, I dont want to replace unless I have to. Don't want to deal with any potential install issues.
