Windows XP SP2

I installed it about a week ago. I turned off the firewall and don't use antivirus software anyway. I mainly got it for the many bugfixes. Seems to be working fine now.

I am running the SP2 without problems so far. I am running the firewall and it seems to be working.

No problems here. It didn't 'sync' with my Symantec Corporate Edition Antivirus, so I turned off the Windows monitoring. Don't use the Windows software firewall and use a firewall in the hardware router.

I don't use Internet Explorer, but that added a popup blocker.

Didn't need XP2 really, but best to keep up to date.

Keith.

Running SP2 on both of my PCs at work, one with Office 2003 and the other with 2000. Seems to be working ok. The popup control is nice. I haven't installed at home yet, where I run a router, ZoneAlarm, and an antivirus package on an old 333Mhz machine with XP.

Where are you guys getting this? Microsofts site says:

Either option below will turn on Automatic Updates, which will prepare your computer to automatically download Windows XP Service Pack 2 when it becomes available.

I use Apple computers myself but you can run Microsoft Windows XP on a Mac using Microsoft Virtual PC. It is amazing to me that Microsoft left the Firewall open in Windows operating systems. That is like leaving your door unlocked when you go to work so that you will not have to unlock the door when you get home. The Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack II is supposed to close the Firewall, but you can also do this yourself.

From what I have been able to find out, you can make Windows XP fairly safe by using the Mozilla browser instead of Internet Explorer (which has Active X and sneakware, adware, and spyware can be added just by visiting a web site). There are some freeware anti-spyware products like Ad-aware and Spybot. You can even get free anti-virus scans at Trent Micro's Housecall. But using Windows XP Professional in Virtual PC on a Mac is one thing compared to searching the internet with it. Better to search with the internet with the Mac.

After further review...

I just had "explorer.exe" crash on me. The PC is still running, but I "lost" about a dozen icons from the lower right part of the task bar. Probably the resident programs are still running, but now I can't access them. For example, the volume control and nvidia utilities are no longer in the tray.

Never had exactly this crash prior to SP2.
