The Windows 8 Customer Preview is now available...

For those of you who are curious... here are my findings after an hour:

I'm running it in Oracle VM VirtualBox and would strongly advise trying it through some kind of virtualization setup. For one thing, it is still in the beta process, so some things are going to be broken. However, the bigger reason not to make this your primary OS is that there are a lot of changes, and the new Metro interface is going to take a lot of getting used to. Metro can be disabled, and it looks and acts a lot like Windows 7 after that.

Metro is the same interface used on the new Windows phones, so it is geared towards touch screens and feels strange on a normal PC. Running non-metro apps dumps you back into a paired down desktop interface that looks similar to Windows 7, with no start menu. Switching back and forth feels strange since you are constantly being kicked in and out of Metro.

Controls are hidden in Metro apps, so they look very simple. For example, to search within an app or get to the settings menu, hold your mouse at the upper right corner of the screen and the menus will appear on the right side of the app.

At this point, Metro is suited for light home use, and won't be ready for business use until it sees some more refinement and until more applications can run on it... a new version of Office is on the way. Even then, the lack of a traditional windowing concept for looking at multiple applications at one time could be very annoying. Basically, it makes a PC feel like a tablet. I'm not sure how well power users and business users are going to like this. Then again, for those who want to just check their email and browse the web, this might not be such a bad thing.

I'm going to play around with it for a while and see how the beta progresses before making a judgement on the changes.

I like Metro, it finally makes moves away from the Explorer interface to a single-click interface.

Setting up uses your "Windows Live" ID. NICE! Email, Skydrive docs & pics are instantly available. Finally, Microsoft is converging the services that work best together, all with a single click/touch of the screen. I can see why people who have Windows Phone 7 like it so much, it's easy to use.

Running it here under VMware Fusion 4.1.1, the VMWare video drivers cause much flickering, these need to be updated. Outside of that, it ran well.

Nice to see Microsoft finally move forward rather than just make another button for the Start menu. And what's with that goofy new logo. ??

I had an early build of it through MSDN. Didn't blow me away, but these things are iterative and they do take time.

Ill have to try it this weekend. I tried the developer preview and I hated metro. Its stupid with a mouse, though I can see using it on a tablet.

Windows 8 server preview was released today. Either in ISO disc image or a ready-made VHD download for Hyper-V or other virtualization software such as Virtual Box.

It sounds interesting, but I'll wait, if its anything like Vista I'll be glad I did. I went from XP to Win 7 and was happy to have skipped the Vista fiasco. JMO

Have been running it a few days on my laptop. Did not have anything on it that I could do without so took the plunge.

A lot different than previous version.

Watched some videos on YouTube and that was a +. Like what I see but would hate being an IT person when it is deployed in a business environment as it would take a lot of training.

Looks like a keeper. Designed for smart phones, tablets, laptop & desktops.

Might have to try it.. The switching in/out of Metro would seem kinda odd, but I just got done looking at it through TechRepublic.com. Looks like a "PC" Windows Phone - apps and all!

Not sure how it will fare with the corporate world. (me being an IT guy) I assume the metro interface can be disabled and be replaced with a standard Windows desktop?

Dangit, I just got used to Windows 7!!!!

Have spent a few more days running Windows 8 and am slowly getting things figured out.

Making progress and at this point am impressed.

Much different and that is an understatement.

I read that article and see it as a scare-ware story.

There are several good companies that will see this as a revenue opportunity to lasso these devices into their corporate enterprise manageability suites. A non issue once these devices get rolling.

There is no way MS is going to lose out on the business sector ,I'm sure that the end release of Win8 will have a UI choice at load where you can choose Metro or a tradational UI like Win7 has. I think they are just holding back on the specifics.

Ok.... I will say it... Metro is terrible on a large high resolution screen since apps run full screen. There is a side by side view, but it isn't useful since one app gets squeezed in a tiny space.

I tend to have several windows open at any given time, and I want to put them where I want on the screen. Running most apps full screen at 1920x1080 (or even 1680x1050) is a complete waste of such a large display.

It is nice for lightweight browsing, email, and basic stuff. However the classic desktop wins for real work, at least for now... maybe they will make changes before the full release.

Still haven't tried multi monitor support... I understand that is actually decent.

Metro is terrible on any screen. Microsoft is trying to come off as "cool and hip" and it fails miserably in that category. It's like they never even tested the mess that is Metro before shipping it.

I assume the reason for Metro is that it will look the same on smart phones, tablets, laptop & desktop computers.

You can change the size of Metro. I am running Google Chrome on it as a web browser and Thunderbird for email.

Like the Skydrive feature which I use and some other apps.

Apps store is growing.

As previously mentioned if you are thinking of playing with it, recommend that you watch several video clips in YouTube before you take the plunge.

It is an early customer review and I have had less issues with it than I did with the Windows 7 customer review.

I installed it on one of my Laptops that did not have any important stuff on it.

Would not install it on a computer unless you have an extra one laying around yet.

Running it dual booting on a laptop (yes I have a full image).

Installation was relatively uneventful, although it did manage to change the system clock (which was right before it changed it).

Initial impressions after an hour or so:

  • The fish is ridiculous
  • I don't like Metro

It may be better on some sort of tablet, but I'm going to give Metro a few days before I try turning it off. (How did you do that by the way, everything I've found says you can't)

That is exactly the point of Metro. I still don't like it for heavy multitasking but I will admit that the tiles are nice and will improve as more applications are developed... for example, the weather app shows current weather, stock tile shows current market conditions, etc. As an application launcher, it is good. The window manager function is what I'm not extremely impressed with yet.

ARM and other non-x86/x86-64 architectures will only have metro because current Windows apps designed for x86 process won't run on those architectures without being modified and re-compiled.

It runs pretty well in VirtualBox. I'm giving it 4GB of RAM even though it can run with much less, but I have 16GB on my desktop so why not? Also I have Windows 3.11 for Workgroups running on VirtualBox just because I can. Its kind of comical to bring them up along side each other.

By the way, the fish is supposed to be a betta fish, since Windows 8 is in beta... I thought it was kind of funny. The fish will go away after Windows 8 is out of beta.

LOVE IT! BeOS too?

Yeah, I got the "Beta", I just didn't think it was funny.

Interesting that in a dual boot environment if you change the default operating system to Win7 you lose the fancy new screen to select the operating system. It seems to boot faster as well.
