Apple can get away with charging less because they release what I would call "smaller" OS updates more often than Microsoft. MS waits a few years. Apple cranks out a new version of OS X every 12-18 months.

There aren't a lot of 64 bit plug-ins for the 64 bit version, so it isn't compatible with all websites. The 32 bit version works just fine, though.

One other quirk of the 64 bit version is that it will not allow the use of unsigned device drivers under any circumstances. The 32 bit version allows the administrator to install unsigned drivers using an override of the OS security system. The override is not available in the 64 bit version.

Glad you brought up the 32/64 Explorer issue. Flash is now available as a single install package that will put both 32 and 64 bit on your system if it detects a 64 bit browswer.

Java on the other hand you'll need to do 2 installations of. One for the 32 bit and one for the 64 bit.

The two links you'll need are:

Even if you do all that, there are still some sites that just don't quite work properly. I'm not sure what it is. I use the 64 bit browser if I go to a site with too much advertising - it seems to kill about half of it.
