Windows 7

Been researching here....kinda scared now...

As mentioned in my wifi thread, the old Vista (64 bit) on my desktop has registry issues, and is on the way out. As a matter of fact, all the issues I had came from Vista.... The desktop itself is in great shape (many parts are newer) so I really want a new OS. Thought about windows 10, but it would require a hard install (bye bye stuff) and 10 to me is just okay...

I really do like windows 7, and think it might be perfect for this computer. So I hop on amazon, and start reading some serious horror stories about all kinda of different things!. I can't really tell exactly what some of these folks are selling! So my question is, how does one go about getting hold of W7? Any suggestions or good places to buy?


Heck, all it seems I need is a disk and a key it seems. Also makes me wonder if any members who upgraded to 8 or 10 might even be willing to sell theirs. That is, if one could still use it....open to some ideas here...school me.

of the MS operating systems i like W7 the most.
that said i use Linux. you might look into it unless you have windows only software you NEED.
Oh and Linux is free. you can test it out for free as well. download the CD burn it and boot your comp to the disk.
i suggest Linux Mint. https://www.linuxmint.com/
with the cinnamon desktop.

$140 on Newegg. My Win7 is only good for one install. Some versions are good for 3 installs IIRC so you might get a hold of one of them cheap.

Win7 product keys are switched over when it's updated to Windows 10 so no luck there. If you absolutely need Windows for the long haul I would go with Windows 10 since the EOL (End Of Life) for Windows 7 is Jan 2020. Vista EOL is next year. Time does fly by fast.

I have found product keys at our local dump for win7 in the computer recycle pile. I use them in virtual box for sandbox testing for work and my kids thinkpad that went Xp>win 7>win 10.

I would not pay for it on an old machine.

W7 is stable, but dated. Only security updates are coming now, mainstream support has stopped.
Linux Mint with Cinnamon or Linux Peppermint is very windows like, free, and will load in a few minutes. Try it before you make a Win7 purchase, you will be surprised, and might even wonder why you waited so long.

Will have to see how simple it is to use....as wife and son will use it as well.....

If it was just for me, easy choice. Could even do dual.....

Win7 is stable, and has good old fashion interface if you miss xp. If you have a new machine just use Win 10 as it will support newer hardware. Some of my old hardware I'm afraid of converting to newer OS, like those PCI add on card and serial port stuff.

I have Win 7 on my laptop. My son ugraded to Win10 from Win7..hated it...wanted to go back but it didn't work.

I stuck with 7.
