Will this hurt the clutch?

I haven't driven a manual trans car with DBW but even OBD2 vs. OBD1 was a downgrade...



Pretty funny.

On a 10 speed Semi you start out in 3rd loaded, 4th unloaded and in 5th bobtail. you pretty much get the same amount of slip in each scenario. there is 1st and 2nd if you need it, but you have to be ultra quick to make the shift.

I think only a motorcycle should have a tall first gear. On a 3000lb car a tall first gear will just wear your clutch too much. Since its RWD a new clutch may not be a major ordeal, but Im betting it is since its a newish car. Nothing new is simple it seems. The more slip the shorter the clutch life. If he doesn't plan to get super mileage out of the car then he should lean toward enjoying the car more by starting in 2nd, but not up on a hill. But he could probably have more fun by being a bit rev happy in first than trying to lug 2nd.

All these broad reaching statements about DBW are ignoring the huge differences from platform to platform.

Each manufacturer has many strategies for the DBW system, and they vary greatly. Hence some are better than others.

Since they are generally adaptive systems many can be easily reset/recalibrated for better response by simply pulling a fuse or plugging in a programmer.

Surprised nobody mentioned this: shifting into too low a gear prematurly can be a safety issue - especially for a new driver. Kid bogs out after cutting somebody off, and he needs to get on it, not bog down or stall.
