Will a shop install a transmission I buy?

When people ask about bringing their own parts you will get a pretty good gauge within the first 30 seconds if they are reasonable. If they are the next response is there is no warranty and you’ll be responsible for labor if there’s fitment issues or you supply the wrong part - If I’m feeling generous we’ll just charge the time to reassemble and push the car outside, if I’m not in a good mood you’re paying my labor rate by the hour until you supply the correct part as your car is tying up my lift. This is usually the point in which people decide it’s better to buy my part.

Not trying to be cheap. I just don't trust people. This transmission has been slipping for like 3 years, so maybe 3 years ago I could have just bought a new oem trans from mopar. Idk, I'll call the dealer monday and see what they say. I know I needed some parts on my 1999 dodge ram one time and they said they quit selling the parts after 20 years. I've heard too many horror stories of transmissions not rebuilt correctly and has to be corrected 3 or 4 times. It's a 17 year old truck with 230,000 miles on it. was just hoping for another stock oem transmission, don't need some fancy $8000 suncoast transmission when the truck will be in the junkyard way before the second trans goes. NOW, with that being said, if I can't get a brand new transmission i'd probably just have the one I have in the truck rebuilt by someone who hopefully knows what they're doing.
 
That’s plenty fair. I know we see a lot of shops claiming to use OE stuff when in reality it’s not.

What if I give the shop $4500 for a mopar trans and they turn around and go order a $2500 jasper trans? You never know. One time I let a diesel shop order the parts just so he could make his markup on the part, then he ended up in the hospital and my parts were held hostage at his shop and the truck couldn't be fixed. Things happens I get it, but. Personally I like to just provide the part, let me know when you can fit me in and I'll have the truck there for you ready when you open first thing in the morning. No need for it to sit in your parking lot taking up space or end up getting stolen or something like that.

I believe that one is a reman and/or the description is wrong. But hey, maybe worth a call in the morning? And I found similar pricing at other dealerships. Here’s one from Texas for $816.

If you can’t trust the shop to order the parts you asked for are you really going to trust them to install them correctly?

Some will but if there's a problem with it , it's your problem.
 
Recently our EZ-Go TXT electric golf cart had a bad intermediate gear with a bad spline to the motor. I called a local shop and they would not install the replacement gear and bearing assembly that i ordered. I totally understand their response because I have been in that position myself. My son and I changed it and it took almost an hour. I really just needed a helper. We use it when camping and to entertain our grand babies.

This is where skills and knowledge of a shop come into play and worth the cost. Some coolers you can flush fine, others you have to replace and then others are cheap enough it's better to replace then flush for solid peace of mine that metal won't circulate and damage the new transmission. If you are replacing yours anyhow then all is good - replaced it and flush the lines and you are better than golden.
 
I think the root cause of this entire discussion is that the he has trust issues with shops - I get it as the shop world has a bad name like used car lots because of the bad apples. You can only research a shop by talking to them to get your vibes, look at reviews, talk to customers and all and hope for the best. I tell you with complete truth - my shop stays backed up with 3-4 weeks of appointments, 100% 5 star reviews, every customer is loyal to us because we are fair, provide excellent work, work with people in an honest and transparent manner and they love us. We have customers that are hours away and come only to us. I am proud of that - but we still have to prove ourselves to every new customer because they always come side eyed at first because they have been to a bad shop and gotten ripped off. I feel you in your hesitation to go to a shop - and transmissions shops are usually the worst! I will also say that a trans change is not rocket science and if you are handy and have the tools - knock it out yourself after fully studying the repair manual for required steps, proper procedures and anything else important then have at it!

A great transmission rebuilder will make it better than factory and a quantity rebuilder will be lesser quality than factory. Try to find a great trans rebuilder

I don't think there are many, that is if they all toss and bounce the parts around like some of the highly rated youtube ones do.
And drag the machined surface of the valve body all over the steel top work bench etc. etc.
I think the most important thing about rebuilding anything is be slow and careful, problem with too many "great rebuilders" is they brag about how many units they can do in a day. No way can all the important checks be done in that amount of time especially vacuum. To do it correct its not a wam bam deal.
