Definitely keep that car......used car prices have gone up....people are actually "keeping" their cars longer now.....you're gonna be stuck in another "used" car with unknown reliability......better off sticking to the one you KNOW.....just keep it topped off with oil.....

Or, donate it to science....lol. Throw every "stop leak" product in it, and see which ones slows the leak the best :P Obviously, not all at once though.....heheh.

Dude.

Keep the Saturn. Look at all the learning you've done on these.

You've done lots of work that you'd have to probably REPEAT on the next car.

Either keep the oil topped off on regular OCI's or better yet, get AMSOIL EURO 5w-40 in it and be our poster child!

If that's the only issue, then I'm with the rest of them. Keep it! Just don't run the sump dry. lol

Not gonna happen.
No decent Honda or Toyota is going to go for 2K.
Keep the Saturn, and keep an eye out for cheap oil.

This is sound.

If you do replace, only buy a car with MT. If the wife/fiancee doesnt like it, then let her walk.

A clutch is far cheaper than an AT replacement.

I think that any car, any make, in your budget is going to use oil. The question is if your oil use is truly fouling the O2 and cat, or if it is just burning and is like many other cars on the road.

I got rid of my Saturn when it came down to waiting up to two weeks for parts when all of the dealerships started selling something else.

I'm not saying that it's not a good car. I liked most of the Saturn vehicles (except fo the rebadged Chevys that showed up in the end of the brand's life). It's just not practical for everyone because the brand is largely unsupported by GM. Don't let them lie to you and tell you that you'll get proper service at Chevy dealerships. Almost everything needs to be special-ordered ordered even on cars that are just a few years old (S-series is even worse in this respect). Vehicles like the Relay won't have this problem, because they are essentially just a Chevy. But anything that was a rebadged Opel, or anything before that, good luck.

New GM has done everything that they can to bury this brand. It's unfurtunate, because it had a lot of potential when it was in its prime.

Keeping a Saturn now is about as practical as keeping a Daewoo (also owned by GM). Remember when *that* brand had retail locations in the US?

That said, if you can take care if its oil consumption problems, it's probably going to last a long time. Just beware if it's an older one. These Saturn engines had two serious defects that were related to oil. The first is the stuck ring problem. The second is that the oil feed port would develop hairline cracks that would cause a leak into the coolant system. This problem was resolved around '98.

I told you in another thread that if you spend $400 trying to get the car to pass emissions and it still doesn't pass, you get a waiver and it never needs another emissions test ever again.
http://dnr.mo.gov/gatewayvip/v-owner/failed-vehicles.htm#waivers You already spent how much on the cat and O2 sensors? Just buy a bunch of other emissions related parts:
Quote:
•Oxygen sensors;
•Catalytic converters;
•EGR valves;
•Evaporative canisters;
•PCV valves;
•Air pumps;
•Distributors;
•Ignition wires;
•Coils;
•Spark plugs; and
•Any hoses, gaskets, belts, clamps, brackets, or other accessories directly associated with these parts.

http://dnr.mo.gov/gatewayvip/v-owner/qualifiedcomponents.htm
Until you've spent $400. Show the recipts to the DMV, get the waiver, then return the parts and get your money back. No more emission tests for you, and no more problem. Just keep adding oil and drive the Saturn into the ground.

I gave our old 1998 Civic EX sedan to my nephew as a graduation present and will get it back when he buys a new car soon. With 255K miles it is worth about $1000. Unfortunately the car is 5 speed.

No offense, but you really aren't being very smart about this.

You have a car that is paid for, small, reliable, and good on gas. It burns a bit of oil - big deal. Find oil slaes and top it up once a week or so.

You want to sell it to buy.....a small, reliable car that is good on gas.....wait a minute....!

You will almost be guaranteed to spend more on another econo car, and who say that new one won't have issues that will cost you even MORE money???

Also, a lot of small econo cars burn oil, it's not only the Saturn. 1998-2001(?) Corollas often burn oil, as do 1.6L-powered Civics.

I am sad to say but I agree with you :-( He is not rational about his Saturn. Too many people have given him lots of solutions but he plainly refuses to listen.

This is my last reply and I promise not to reply to any of chevyboy's posts. I feel I had been enabler and I want to stop.

In chevyboy's defense, he is young AND I distinctly remember 'some' posters(cant recall whom) that did suggest to get rid of the car like it was the plague as soon as his cat was 're-replaced'.

The guy is obviously feeling a bit unsure about himself and I think this thread should be enough of a kick to the common sense portion of his brain to give him confidence in the Saturn SL2 moving forward.

Now, be the poster child and get on Amsoil Euro 5w-40 and do the pioneering work of legends for BITOG!

Calling Pablo!? Get this man some AFL! Here's to hoping.

Here's the situation in a nutshell.

Young dude. Finds online forum. Learns something new every day. Practices theory in real life. Gets confidence in his own mechanical abilities. "Yay, I got the sensor out!!!" Gets a second vehicle, uses his new confidence to make a business case to the family. "I can work on it myself. I can haul scrap metal." Gets confident. "It runs great. The AC is cold." He thinks every used vehicle he picks out will bring similar luck.

Chevyboy, you've been on a winning streak. Selling the saturn will break it.

I think you've got it.
This member isn't a troll, he's just young and maybe not yet all that savvy.
He's learning, he's developing his shade tree abilities and he's using this site as both a sounding board and a source of advice.
Nothing wrong with that.

Keep the Saturn... for now. Don't sink too much money into it; just keep it safe and perform required maintenance. Run a thicker oil and keep an eye on the level. Don't worry about the consumption unless it starts fogging the entire neighborhood.

While you are doing this, open a savings account and try your hardest to put a reasonable car payment into it every month. Let this money build up until you can buy something better. You can get free savings accounts from some online banks paying around 1% interest... not much but better than paying a fee like some local banks require. There is a huge psychological value in putting the money into a dedicated account rather than letting it build up in checking. It will build up fast.

Buying another old $2,000 car will get you somebody else's problem. Prices on used cars are out of control due to multiple factors.
