Wife Lands Plane after Husband Dies

An EAA Chapter member in my group many years ago had something close happen. She had a pilots license and maybe her husband's did as well. They were on a cross country trip when her husband had a heart attack mid flight. They had a Lanceair IV-P and were cruising at roughly 300 kts. She radioed ATC and their response was "Maam we'll send up a Cessna 172 to rendezvous with you to follow. " She had to remind them that she was flying at 300 kts and slowing down

Not to worry. Most kids have some MS Flight Simulator experience. :D

True story. Back in 1996 I missed one or two questions on the aviator test given to applicants who want to enroll in OCS and fly for the USN. The recruiter asked me if I had my pilots license and I told him I had hundreds or maybe thousands of hours on MS Flight Sim and other flight sims. haha.

Mythbusters had an episode on "Can you land a commercial aircraft with tower help" if I remember correctly

There are programs for flight companions that include the training to land an aircraft in an emergency.
The Pinch Hitter course....tried to get my Wife, girlfriend then, to take one....nope. When I realized that for the most part private flying, like cramped sportscars and convertibles, are really fun for the driver.

If I had a pilot's license, there is zero chance I would ever ask my wife to fly with me. I am a very safe driver, but when my wife is in the car with me, you would think by her reactions that we were in the Daytona 500.

I have no idea how she did this without getting ill, but my Wife who is NOT a comfortable flyer, would sit in the Cherokee, pull her baseball hat low, turn her headset very low and read a book. We had friends in New Haven and would fly from Southeastern Mass every few weeks weather dependent. Long story short, when we Daughter arrived, Wife was done w/ my silly airplane hobby...

That's really sad. If you find the USA today article there is a link to their wedding in Early 2024. I'm sorry for her loss.

She did a fantastic job of staying calm based on most of the audio i just listened to... Ive flown in a King air with a friend (nothing like hearing "not bad for a rebuilt total" at 250ish KTS) and it is a very confusing array.

That she was able to land it is incredible with no/nosignificant damage even more so. Kudos to all the folks that helped, and Kudos to her. It's pretty amazing all around.
